Ourew tool puts crop water-use data at producers' fingertips.

Lethbridge Polytechnic researchers have developed Irrimap, a new web-based tool that helps producers, agronomists and researchers measure evapotranspiration (ET) in agricultural settings.

“Measuring ET is important to determine soil moisture levels, giving producers, agronomists and researchers the information they need to make decisions on irrigation duration, amounts and more,” says Dr. Michael Kehoe, research scientist with the Mueller Irrigation Research Group (MIRG).

Irrimap uses publicly available data to provide insights into crop water usage for areas ranging from small fields to entire sections. The easy-to-use tool can be accessed from a phone, laptop or other device, helping make agricultural data more accessible for informed irrigation and water-management decisions.

The project also highlights the connection between classroom learning and applied research. Derian Setoguchi, who graduated from Computer Information Technology in 2025, began working with MIRG as an intern and used skills from the classroom to code and program Irrimap. He now works with the research group as a research assistant.

Irrimap is now available for public use at irrimap.ca. 🚜

We’re proud to see Dr. Willemijn Appels and the Mueller Irrigation Research Group take on this exciting new chapter in applied irrigation research. 💧

With a $500,000 contribution from Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR), MIRG will lead a provincial and national hub focused on irrigation innovation and practical solutions for producers.

The work happening at our Research Farm brings together researchers, students, industry and agricultural producers to tackle the water challenges facing southern Alberta and beyond.

What happens when your instructor is still treating clients at the highest levels of sport?

Massage Therapy instructor Taylor Quan continues to work as a registered massage therapist while pursuing specialized training in areas including Thai massage, lymphedema therapy and Active Release Technique.

He’s also travelled to the Ironman World Championship for three consecutive years as part of the treatment team, gaining experience working with elite athletes in high-performance environments.

That ongoing industry work helps Taylor bring current techniques, clinical experience and real-world scenarios directly into the classroom.

Congratulations to William Singer III (Api’soomaahka/Running Coyote) on being named the 2026 recipient of the Alberta Museums Association’s Lieutenant Governor’s Award!

A valued friend of Lethbridge Polytechnic, William has generously shared his knowledge, creativity and cultural teachings with our students, employees and broader community.

His contributions to our campus include the traditional Buffalo Winter Count Robe, unveiled in 2023, which tells the story of our institution through the Blackfoot tradition of storytelling through art. He also partnered with the polytechnic to create the Iissksiniip (Coming to Know and Learn) Coulee Walk, an interpretive self-guided tour highlighting traditional plants, their uses and Siksikaitsitapi creation stories.

His artistic vision can also be seen in Founders’ Square, which tells the story of the land where Lethbridge Polytechnic now stands.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Award recognizes William’s significant contributions to southern Alberta. Congratulations, William! 👏
