Hands-on experience makes all the difference.
Students in the therapeutic recreation program had the opportunity to collaborate with recreation therapists in the field to create adapted leisure equipment. To kick things off, students completed a 90-minute design thinking workshop facilitated by the Agility Innovation Zone before diving into their projects.
In the Winter 2026 term, students created:
👉 Adapted tools for a new community woodshop program in the Crowsnest Pass
👉 Inclusive fidget toys for adolescents in Yellowknife
👉 An adapted Nintendo Switch glove for an individual in Calgary
👉 Adapted crocheting tools for a stroke rehab team in Calgary
👉 An adapted beading apparatus for Indigenous stroke patients in the Northwest Territories
👉 Adapted tools for cooking and arts programs at the Alberta Children's Hospital

These tactical, creative design projects gave students valuable new skills — such as 3D printing — along with meaningful connections to recreation therapists in the field and real-world experience to highlight when applying for internships and jobs after graduation.
