Hi, I’m Kas! Last semester, I was an intern for Museum Studies 4000. One part of my internship was to research artists in the Buchanan collection. I chose to research and illustrate Roloff Beny and Ghitta Caiserman-Roth.
Roloff Beny was a Canadian artist born in 1924 in Medicine Hat. He’s known for his photography, but started his art career with painting. When he was 15, he had an art show of his watercolour paintings at the Manitoba Society of Artists. He took photography more seriously when he lost his painting equipment on a trip, and had told a reporter that his upbringing had influenced his painting, and that his work “would not be complete if he had not been brought up in the prairies.”
Ghitta Caiserman-Roth was a Canadian artist born in 1923 in Montreal. She started painting as a child, and her art eventually came to reflect her personal experiences, feelings, and social concerns. She helped establish the Montreal Artists School and taught at Sir George Williams University and the Saidye Bronfman Centre, both of which are in Montreal.
