Relationship Decisions Lab

Relationship Decisions Lab Our goal is to understand how people make decisions about their close relationships.

Our research examines how people make decisions about their romantic relationships. For example, what sort of factors do people take into consideration when they try to decide whether to pursue a potential date, invest in a new relationship, or break up with a romantic partner? By studying how people navigate these relationship turning points, we hope to uncover useful decision strategies that will ultimately lead to happier, healthier relationships.

Random numbers--or anchors--can have a surprisingly large impact on people's judgments. What happens when they're applied to romantic relationships?

Our research shows that anchors can make people think that positive things are more likely to happen in their relationships, but they cannot make people think that negative events are more likely to happen.

In other words, people use even meaningless information if it supports the conclusions they want (e.g., their relationship will last forever), but ignore similar information when it threatens those conclusions (e.g., the relationship will end).

The anchoring effect has been replicated so extensively that it is generally thought to be ubiquitous. However, anchoring has primarily been tested in domains in which people are motivated to reach
