The Institute for Earth and Space Exploration at Western University is the leading organization for Earth and Space Exploration research and training in Canada. The mission of the Institute is to lead in interdisciplinary research and innovation in Earth and space exploration, and to strengthen and grow the Canadian Earth and space exploration communities through inspiring and training the next ge

neration of scientists, engineers, social scientists and entrepreneurs. The Institute for Earth and Space Exploration was established in June 2019 and builds on the foundations of the former Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration that was established in 2008. The Institute is home to 64 researchers from the following 8 faculties and 19 departments: Engineering: Civil Engineering; Electrical and Computer; Mechanical and Materials Engineering,
Science: Earth Sciences; Physics and Astronomy; Chemistry, Health Sciences: Kinesiology; Health Studies, Law, Schulich: Biochemistry; Family Medicine; Medical Biophysics; Ophthalmology; Surgery, Social Science: Geography, History, Psychology, Arts & Humanities: Philosophy, Education: Curriculum Studies and Studies in Applied Linguistics. The research conducted by these faculty can be broadly grouped into 6 fundamental disciplinary Research Themes: Earth Observation, Monitoring and Protection, Exploration Technologies, Planetary Processes and Materials, Galactic and Stellar Processes, Space Health, Space Policy, Law and Education.

Today’s NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day is brought you by Western astronomers!

The image, collected by Western University astronomers Jan Cami, Els Peeters and their team is of the Planetary nebula Tc 1, located more than 10,000 light-years away. Captured by the James Webb Space Telescope, the image shows the structure of a planetary nebula first linked to carbon molecules, known as 'buckyballs.'

Hard to believe it's already been two weeks since this year’s Science Rendezvous!

We had a blast sharing the engineering and science behind the Skylark CubeSat, taking everyone on Artemis II's historic journey around the Moon, and sharing a piece of the Moon with you! We look forward to sharing this experience again with you next year.

Ever seen an erupting volcano and a meteor at the same time? Now you have!

On May 25th, over the island of Luzon in the Philippines, a rare sight unfolded. A live video feed of the erupting Mayon Volcano caught the bright green flash and incandescent streak of a falling meteor. Western University Physics and Astronomy professor Peter Brown, an expert on meteors, meteorites, and everything in between lent his insight into the likelihood of this particular meteor producing a meteorite.

Fifteen years after a team of Western University astronomers led by professor Jan Cami first discovered ‘buckyballs’ in space (soccer ball-shaped molecules that resemble a hollow sphere) using the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Spitzer Space Telescope, the team has returned with the James Webb Space Telescope, revealing the first-ever detailed view of the planetary nebula - with spectacular results.

On this Earth Day, join us in celebration of our Pale Blue Dot and the interdisciplinary endeavours of space exploration that work together to show us how special our home planet is.

This has been a historical year for our species, and carrying that momentum forward to enact positive change is a great way to celebrate today. Western Space is proud to be part of the Western campaign that is striving to preserve and protect our shared environment for generations to come.

In Part 1 of this interview, we learned about the exciting career path of Marcelo E. Vazquez, MD, Ph.D., Radiobiology Section Head at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories that led him to become an expert in radiation biology. Check out part 2 of his interview where we take a closer look at how space radiation works and creative ways humans are working to keep astronauts safe in space.

The historic launch of Artemis II is only a day away, and onboard is London, Ontario astronaut, Jeremy Hansen. 🚀

Hansen will make history as the first Canadian to travel to the Moon. Western University Earth Science PhD student Jack Hostrawser was recently interviewed by CTV News as part of an article on the importance of returning to our nearest celestial neighbour, Hansen's links to the Forest City, and what to expect over his 10-day journey to the Moon.
