Today the Western community marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR).

Today, September 30, we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR). Established as an official holiday in 2021 in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, NDTR honours the children who never made it home and the Survivors of residential schools. It also raises awareness about the intergenerational impacts these experiences continue to have on their families and communities.

This day was originally recognized as Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots initiative inspired by the experiences of residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad.

In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis arrived at the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, wearing a new orange shirt for her first day. Unfortunately, the school took her shirt away, replacing it with their institutional uniform.

To commemorate the resilience of the children who survived residential schools, and to remember those who did not, we encourage everyone to wear orange today.

🧡 All are welcome to attend Transforming Insight Into Impact: Advancing Indigenous Health Equity, an interactive space centring Indigenous voices and Survivors, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Ronald D. Schmeichel Building for Entrepreneurship and Innovation - SEI 1110.

While NDTR is observed annually on one day, the work of Truth and Reconciliation must be embraced daily to foster meaningful and lasting change.
