🌸 WIS Cause Spotlight: March – The Endometriosis Research Gap

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women and AFAB individuals worldwide, which is nearly 200 million people. Yet it remains one of the most underfunded and under-researched conditions in medicine.

For decades, patients were told their pain was “normal,” leading to an average diagnostic delay of 7–10 years. The only definitive diagnosis still requires invasive surgery.

This month we highlight Dr. Linda Griffith, Professor at MIT and Director of the Center for Gynepathology Research. After struggling with endometriosis herself, she launched what she calls a “Moonshot for Menstruation Science.” Her lab is developing “patient-on-a-chip” models, which are mini-organs grown from a patient’s own cells to revolutionize diagnosis and personalized treatment.

Endometriosis is not just a fertility issue. It is a systemic inflammatory disease that can affect the lungs, diaphragm, and even the brain. Modern research is shifting toward whole-body care.

In Canada, grassroots groups like EndoAct Canada are advocating for a National Action Plan on Endometriosis, and researchers at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine are studying pelvic pain and reproductive health.

Period pain that disrupts your life is not “just part of being a woman.”

Let’s close the research gap. Let’s validate pain. Let’s fund women’s health.

💜 International Women’s Day – March 8

Today we celebrate the women who are shaping science, breaking barriers, and redefining what leadership in STEM looks like.

From researchers and clinicians to engineers, entrepreneurs, and advocates, women continue to drive innovation and change across every field.

While progress has been made, gender gaps in leadership, pay, and representation still exist. That’s why mentorship, advocacy, and community matter.

Let’s continue uplifting women in STEM, creating inclusive spaces, and building a future where everyone has equal opportunity to thrive.

🌸 WIS Cause Spotlight: December – Girls Who Code

Girls Who Code is a global nonprofit committed to closing the gender gap in technology — empowering girls and non-binary youth through coding education, mentorship, and community-building.

💡 This month’s spotlight features Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code, who launched the movement after seeing how few girls were encouraged to explore computer science. Her work has built one of the strongest pipelines of young women entering tech and continues to reshape the future of digital equity.

Women hold less than 25% of computing jobs worldwide, and early exposure to coding significantly increases the likelihood of pursuing tech careers. Girls Who Code has reached more than 580,000 students, helping diversify and strengthen the next generation of innovators.

Let’s continue advocating for equitable access to STEM education, supporting organizations that uplift girls in tech, and celebrating the women leaders shaping the future of technology.
