Western's very own Victoria Ostrovsky has launched a new website and blog examining early modern women philosophers and their relevance for today's issues and concerns. It's called Forgotten Voices of the Past and you can check out the site here. Lorneapalooza begin with an erudite and mellifluous presentation on Schopenhauer and Fatalism by Tom Lennon (Western, emeritus). Lennon argued that tragedy, not causal determination, was the true core of fatalism and that Schopenhauer was a fatalist. Schopenhauer's fatalism is tied to his use of the Kantian notion of the sublime, according to Lennon: "What gives to everything tragic...its characteristic tendency to the sublime, is the dawning of the knowledge that the world and life can afford us no true satisfaction, and therefore are not worth our attention to them. Join us on Oct 9th for Lorne-apalooza, a celebration of the philosophical career of our distinguished colleague and friend Lorne Falkenstein. Speakers include many of Lorne's former students, former Western colleagues, and compatriots and friends from around the globe. Topics will range across a career's worth of ideas and contributions, contributions too numerous to list. Although we are sad to see Lorne retire from Western, we could not resist the opportunity of a celebration for a grand career and such lasting impacts on our institution, our philosophical community, and the world of ideas. Heidi Savage (SUNY, Geneseo) has recently written a sparkling review of our Sourcebook in the History of Philosophy of Language for Metascience (2017) 26: 519-521. It is really nice to hear it being spoken about so positively. Nicer still is that the graduate students at Western will be using it as the basis for a summer reading and research group.
