Introducing Our Keynote Speaker:
✨Celina Caesar-Chavannes.✨

Celina Caesar-Chavannes has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, an MBA in Healthcare Management, and an Executive MBA from the Rotman School of Management.

She is an international lecturer on the inclusion of marginalized populations in clinical research and a past member of the Governing Council of the University of Toronto. She also served as a member of the Institutional Advisory Board of the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction, part of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
She is also a member of the Congress of Black Women.
During her short term as a politician thus far, she has advocated for people suffering from mental illness and was awarded the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health Champions of Mental Health Parliamentarian Award in May 2017. She was also named one of the Most Influential People of African Descent, Global 100 Under 40, Politics &Governance in 2017.

Introducing our Award Presenters: SANDY HUDSON

An award-winning public intellectual, Sandy is a Toronto-based organizer, communications specialist and public intellectual.
She is the founder of the Black Lives Matter movement presence in Canada and Black Lives Matter – Toronto. She also co-founded the Black Liberation Collective – Canada, the campus-based extension of the movement. The work Sandy has accomplished with her team has been formidable, and her efforts to publicly address anti-Black racism have resulted in concrete policy change, including the winding down of the program that places police officers in the largest school board in North America.
She also helped to found the Black Legal Action Centre, a speciality legal aid clinic, which provides direct legal services and test case litigation for Black communities in Ontario. She currently serves as the organization’s Vice-Chair.
She was the first Black woman to be elected President of the University of Toronto Students' Union and Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students - Ontario.

Sandy credits her accomplishments to her parents who raised her with a strong moral compass, the elders who came before her, and the team of inspiring people she is blessed to work with.

Introducing our Award Presenters: ZANANA L. AKANDE

Zanana Akande has worked towards social justice in our society by addressing education, communications and the media, feminism, race relations and social change. She was elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1990, was appointed Minister of Community and Social Services, thus becoming the first Black woman to hold a cabinet position in Canada.

She also served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier. In that role, she was responsible for the implementation of “jobsOntarioyouth“ which provided thousands of jobs to youth across Ontario for four consecutive summers.

She has served on the boards of many organizations, including the Elizabeth Fry Society, the YWCA of Toronto, the United Way of Greater Toronto, the Family Services Association, Toronto Community Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Fund and Legacy Board, as Governor of Centennial College, and as President of Harbourfront Centre. During her term as president of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations, she co-chaired the Safe and Compassionate Schools Committee of the TDSB, examining the implementation of the Safe Schools legislation in the Toronto District School Board.

Zanana has been the recipient of many awards and medals recognizing her commitment to education and Community. She was also presented with The Keys to the City by the mayor, John Tory, for her work in equity and social justice.

Introducing our Award Presenters: M.NOURBESE PHILIP

M.NourbeSe Philip is an unembedded poet, essayist, novelist, playwright and independent scholar who lives in the space-time of the City of Toronto.
She practiced law in the City of Toronto for seven years before becoming a poet and writer. She has published four books of poetry including the seminal She Tries Her Tongue; Her Silence Softly Breaks, one novel and four collections of essays.
Her book-length poem, Zong!, is a conceptually innovative, genre-breaking epic, which explodes the legal archive as it relates to slavery. Her most recent work is BlanK, a collection of essays on racism and culture.
Among her awards are numerous Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council grants, as well as the Pushcart Prize (USA, 1981), the Casa de las Americas Prize (Cuba, 1988), the Lawrence Foundation Prize (USA, 1994), and the Arts Foundation of Toronto Writing and Publishing Award (Toronto,1995), Dora Award finalist (drama, 1999).
Her fellowships include Guggenheim (1990), McDowell (1991), and Rockefeller (Bellagio) (2005).
In 2001 She was an awardee of both the YWCA Woman of Distinction (Arts) and the Elizabeth Fry Rebels for a Cause awards. She has been Writer-in-Residence at several universities and a guest at writers' retreats.

Introducing our Award Presenters: KOFI HOPE

Kofi Hope is a Rhodes Scholar, Doctor of Philosophy in Politics, community activist and youth advocate.
He is also a Senior Policy Advisor at the Wellesley Institute and a Strategic Consultant for the Vice President HR/Equity at the University Toronto along with being the current Bousfield Distinguished Visitor in Planning at UofT’s School of Urban Planning.
Kofi previously served as the Founding Executive Director of the CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals (CEE) a non-profit which creates economic opportunities for Black youth in Toronto.
In 2005 he founded the Black Youth Coalition Against Violence, a group which advocated for real solutions to the issue of gun violence. This advocacy work included a presentation for then Prime Minister Paul Martin and led to him being named one of the Top Ten People to Watch in Toronto in 2006 by the Toronto Star.
He has delivered over 125 speaking engagements in Canada and the UK, was co-chair of Olivia Chow’s election advisory committee in 2014 and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Atkinson Foundation and Toronto Environmental Alliance.

Introducing our Award Presenters: LAURA MAE LINDO

Laura Mae Lindo is a Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener Centre, a respected activist and an educator who holds both a Masters and PhD in Education.
Her commitment to building inclusive communities both within and outside of educational environments is grounded in her knowledge of how to put anti-oppression theories into practice.
Laura Mae is a knowledgeable advocate for the rights of women and girls, a respected ally to marginalized community members, and, most importantly, a courageous public speaker on issues often left unaddressed in the mainstream.
She is the Official Opposition Critic for Anti-Racism, and Citizenship and Immigration.

The Leader of the Official Opposition recently appointed her as Chair of Official Opposition’s first Black Caucus, to collaborate with Black communities and allies to address systemic anti-Black racism in Ontario.
