A symposium to celebrate Brenda Milner and her lifetime of accomplishments is being held at the Neuro. Professor Brenda Milner, who turns 100 this year (2018) will reflect on all that has been learned in 100 years of neuropsychology/cognitive neuroscience, as well as look toward the future.

The symposium takes place September 6-7, 2018, at The Neuro with a select group of high profile speakers, as well as more informal reminiscences from her multi-generational 'scientific offspring’, and interactive sessions for and with trainees.

Le Scientifique en chef du Québec, Rémi Quirion, a participé à une plénière portant sur la science ouverte (open science) dans le cadre du réunion annuelle de Sentinelle Nord.

Il était accompagné de :

- Yves De Koninck et Marcel Babin (Sentinelle Nord, Université Laval)
- Alan C. Evans (McGill Centre for Integrative Neuroscience, The Neuro)
- Benoît Lamarche (Université Laval, Institut sur la nutrition et les aliments fonctionnels).

En 2015, l'Université Laval a reçu 98 M$ sur 7 ans du Fonds d'excellence en recherche Apogée Canada, la plus importante subvention de recherche de son histoire. Ce fonds fédéral aide les universités canadiennes à se mesurer aux meilleurs dans le monde et à mettre en oeuvre des stratégies institutionnelles avant-gardistes et transformationnelles.

INCF 2018 - Montreal

The annual INCF Congress was held on Aug 8th and 9th. The conference provided a meeting place for researchers in all fields related to neuroinformatics. The conference featured keynotes from top neuroscientists, community sessions and poster- and demo sessions.

INCF 2018: TVB Workshop - Day 1

The Virtual Brain team is organizing a 2-day workshop at the MNI

- TVB enables biologically realistic modelling of network dynamics using Connectome-based approaches across different brain scales.
- Generate macroscopic neuroimaging signals including fMRI, intracranial and stereotactic EEG, surface EEG and MEG for single subjects.
- Personalized brain network models can be derived from an individual’s MRI data.

Researchers from different backgrounds can benefit from an integrative software platform including a supporting framework for data management (generation, organization, storage, integration and sharing) and a simulation core written in Python. Applications to use cases in the healthy and diseased brain are explicitly presented.

INCF 2018: Brainhack MTL - Day 1

Neuroinformatics teams from McGill University, Concordia University, and the University of Montreal are hosting the 2018 Neuroinformatics Hackathon.

With an emphasis on interoperability between tools, datasets, sharing platforms, and standards used in neuroscience research, participants at the Informatics Hackathon should come to learn, develop proposals, implement solutions, and engage in training.

The aim of the event is increased awareness of existing neuroinformatics projects and initiatives, and development towards unified solutions for reproducible, sustainable, and accessible neuroscience.

The Canadian Open Neuroscience Platform (CONP) aims to bring together many of the country’s leading scientists in basic and clinical neuroscience to form an interactive network of collaborations in brain research, interdisciplinary student training, international partnerships, clinical translation and open publishing. The platform will provide a unified interface to the research community and will propel Canadian neuroscience research into a new era of open neuroscience research with the sharing of both data and methods, the creation of large-scale databases, the development of standards for sharing, the facilitation of advanced analytic strategies, the open dissemination to the global community of both neuroscience data and methods, and the establishment of training programs for the next generation of computational neuroscience researchers. CONP aims to remove the technical barriers to practicing open science and improve the accessibility and reusability of neuroscience research to accelerate the pace of discovery.

McGill professors Alan Evans of The Neuro, Andrea C. LeBlanc of the Lady Davis Institute, and Bernard J. Lapointe, Director of Palliative Care McGill, were awarded Senate of Canada 150 medals for their commitment to advancements in Alzheimer’s disease and palliative care research. Senator Judith Seidman, a former research fellow at The Neuro and Associate Professor of the McGill School of Social Work, nominated them.

The BigBrain Workshop 2017 was a great success, thanks to a collection of world-renowned speakers, led by Pr Karl Zilles, and local explorers of the dataset. Titles covered very high resolution data collection (Zilles, Palomero-Gallagher), storage and manipulation (Glatard), as well as analysis and visualisation of big data (Borgeat, Istomin, Mohlberg). Protocols for the manual and automatic creation of subcortical atlases were described (Jones, Olsen, Sadikot), and anatomical, physiological, and neuroinformatics applications using these cytoarchitectural labels were demonstrated (DeKraker, Dagher, Hyder, Lewis).
