🎨 AESTHETIC AMBITION | Creative Survival After Art School

What does it take to build a lasting artistic practice after art school?

Join cultural worker Hugo Dufour and artist Tricia Middleton for a conversational workshop exploring the economic, social, political and artistic realities of making a living as an artist. Together, they’ll challenge common myths about what it means to be an artist and share practical advice for sustaining a creative practice across different economic circumstances.

💬 The conversation will include an extended Q&A, with time to ask questions and exchange ideas.

🎪 The Attic: Things I’ve seen while lying on my back brings together circus artistry, music, dance and storytelling to explore the life of Shana Carroll, artist-in-residence at Concordia’s School of Performance and founding artistic director of The 7 Fingers.

The production also features Concordia talent: Theatre professor Ana Cappelluto, BFA 88, designed the set and props, while Scenography graduates Jiyeon Lee, BFA 26, and Nadia Agrebi, BFA 26, gained hands-on experience with the production team through the Elspeth McConnell Fine Arts Award.

🎧 15 years of making music together in new ways!

Concordia’s Laptop Orchestra (CLOrk) is marking its 15th anniversary with a new chapter in The Oxford Handbook of Orchestration Studies.

Founded in 2011, the CLOrk brings electroacoustic musicians together to experiment with digital instruments, improvisation and collaborative performance — reimagining what an orchestra can be.

The ensemble is now looking ahead to more immersive performances!

What if making art wasn't about creating something perfect, but simply about making room for curiosity, connection and enjoyment? 🎨

In a new article for The Conversation, Heather McLaughlin, professor of Creative Arts Therapies at Concordia, explores how everyday creative activities can support well-being — from doodling and painting to knitting, photography and more.

You don't have to be an expert, and your creative practice doesn't have to become a project. Sometimes, the value is simply in the process.

McLaughlin also looks at how schools, families and communities can make more room for creative experiences in everyday life.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re highlighting the ways creative arts therapies can support connection, self-expression and well-being in our communities. 💙
Through our ongoing partnership with Bell and the Concordia Arts in Health Centre, students in Concordia’s Creative Arts Therapies programs gain hands-on experience while supporting youth in their communities.

At Nesbitt Elementary School, Aubrey Creasor, a second-year student in the Art Therapy graduate program, is using art to create a therapeutic space where students can explore, express themselves and connect.

"I am most excited about getting to know the students at Nesbitt Elementary School and using art to provide a therapeutic space for them. I am also looking forward to growing my skills as an art therapy intern."

🤖 CTRL + IA : L’agentivité créative à l’œuvre

Si l’IA peut créer, tester et réviser, que reste-t-il de l'agentivité humaine ?

In collaboration with Elektra, and drawing on creative coding, game-making, local open-source models, and agentic workflows, game designer and programmer Thomas Gauthier-Caron, whose work explores playful interaction, and expert-in-residence Christian Beltrami will explore new ways of closing the gap between imagination and ex*****on while preserving human agency, authorship, and judgment. Together, they will examine how experimentation—and even technical failure—can open up unexpected creative possibilities.

Le jeu, le codage créatif et les nouveaux modèles d’IA sont au cœur de cette discussion avec Thomas Gauthier-Caron, concepteur de jeux et programmeur, et Christian Beltrami, expert en résidence en IA à Concordia.
