Today, we're celebrating 30 years of creativity, inclusion and community at Concordia’s Centre for the Arts in Human Development (CAHD).

For three decades, the CAHD has supported neurodivergent adults in expressing themselves through art, while also training students and therapists who learn and grow alongside them. Rooted in the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Centre brings together creative arts therapies, research, and community practice in a shared space of expression and care.

This anniversary video honours the journeys, voices, and collaborations that have shaped CAHD since 1996 — and the many people who continue to make it a place of belonging, creativity and transformation.

Depuis trois décennies, le CAHD soutient des adultes neurodivergents dans leur expression artistique, tout en formant des étudiant·e·s et thérapeutes qui apprennent et évoluent à leurs côtés. Ancré à la Faculté des beaux-arts, le Centre réunit thérapies par les arts, recherche et pratique communautaire dans un espace partagé de création et de soin.

Yesterday we launched the 2026 Art Volt Collection at FOFA Gallery.

Made possible thanks to an initial gift in 2020 from the Peter N. Thomson Family Trust and their representative, Leslie Raenden, the Art Volt platform has evolved through partnerships with cultural institutions and has supported more than 1,000 recent Concordia graduates in launching their careers.

We are proud to welcome 14 new artists into the Collection this year:

Concordia University Concordia Alumni FOFA Gallery Art Volt / Art Volte

🌟 Muram Idris, a BFA Film Production student with a Minor in Art Education, has been selected as a Pathy Foundation Fellow. She is the first Concordia student to receive this national fellowship, which supports young leaders in developing community-based initiatives across Canada. Congrats, Muram!

Muram’s project focuses on community youth filmmaking in Ottawa, working with marginalized youth to expand access to storytelling, creativity, and empowerment.

“I found the Pathy Fellowship strongly aligned with certain goals of mine, especially as an art educator. I want to strengthen community identity amongst the youth, our future leaders. Seeing the support offered by the Pathy Fellowship, I knew it would be a great fit for my initiative and myself.”

“I am a filmmaker and always strive to make change with my work. I took a minor in art education [at Concordia], not thinking much of it. Once I found a passion within it, I found the strong connection between the two paths I’ve chosen to explore. I found filmmaking fits perfectly within community-based art education, and my pedagogy as an art educator,” noted Muram.

Open to recent MFA, MDes, and PhD graduates from Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts, this unique research-creation fellowship supports emerging artists exploring electrification, climate transition, and socio-environmental futures through practice-led artistic research.

🎨 Fellowship includes:
• Approximately $50,000 in funding
• Postdoctoral affiliation at Concordia
• Exhibition, publication, and presentation support
• Access to Volt-Age labs, networks, and collaborative projects

🎨 Ancienne étudiante de la Faculté des beaux-arts de Concordia, la céramiste Mel Arsenault est mise de l'avant dans Le Devoir via sa série Mise en lumière.

Diplômée de la maîtrise en arts visuels (2022), on y apprend comment elle développe une pratique où science, matière et intuition se rencontrent à travers des œuvres céramiques organiques et lumineuses.

🎨 A Concordia Faculty of Fine Arts alumna, ceramic artist Mel Arsenault is featured in Le Devoir’s Mise en lumière series.

A graduate of the MFA program (2022), her practice blends material experimentation, chemical research, and a deep attention to the living world. Her work is known for its organic forms and vibrant glazes developed through rigorous experimentation.

🎓 We are proud to share that Mia Scroggins-Hadley, a student in Art Education – Visual Arts at Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts, has been selected as one of only 20 Canadians to join the 2026 cohort of McCall MacBain Scholars at McGill University.

The prestigious scholarship covers full tuition and living expenses, and includes mentorship and leadership development opportunities within an interdisciplinary community of scholars.

Mia’s work reflects a strong commitment to community-based education, accessibility, and creative practice. They founded a disability studies book club and a chronic illness peer support group, and have contributed to the Faculty as library coordinator in the Fine Arts Reading Room.

🍃 Une expérience de terrain à Concordia au Costa Rica, ainsi que des recherches créatives indépendantes, ont contribué à façonner l’approche de Mia en matière d’apprentissage et de pratique autonome — en reliant de manière significative l’art, l’écologie et l’expérience vécue.

📣 The Faculty of Fine Arts is pleased to welcome Yaniya Lee as a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, Concordia University.

A writer and researcher, Yaniya Lee’s work engages narratives of liberation to develop new methodologies for art criticism, art history, and archival practice. Her research contributes to ongoing conversations around Black art histories in Canada and new approaches to understanding and rethinking the Canadian art canon.

“Lee’s research into histories of Black artists in Canada is part of a valuable re-appraisal of the Canadian art canon. Not only is Yaniya a remarkable art historian, but she is also one of the country’s most prolific and original arts writers,” notes Gabrielle Moser, Chair of the Jarislowsky Institute.

Working under the supervision of Joana Joachim, Yaniya will contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute and help foster dialogue and mentorship within the broader research community.

We welcome her to Concordia and look forward to her contributions over the next two years!
