We as a non-profit organization at McGill Univerisity are collectively dedicated to the process of grassroots development - starting from the bottom up, in the least resourced enclaves of society is the most effective way to shrink the divide of economic disparity that characterizes the developing world. ld, so come out if you want to voice your opinions and discuss strategies of sustainable change. About UCT's SHAWCO, our main beneficiary:
SHAWCO was founded in 1943 by a University of Cape Town medical student who drove an ambulance as a way to finance his medical education. Appalled by the poor hygiene and lack of medical facilities in the townships, outside of the city, he became determined to do something about it. What started as a single student’s initiative grew into one of South Africa's largest student volunteer organizations, involving approximately 1500 students and $1.5 million annually. The organization’s efforts are divided into two branches; education and health care. The education sector reaches over 750 learners beginning in grade three, to oversee the totality of their education so that they are equipped with the skills to matriculate and pursue post-secondary education, so that they will be future pillars of their communities. SHAWCO health provides quality clinical and pediatric services in under-resourced communities through 6 fully equipped clinics which operate on a weekly basis in various Cape town communities. These clinics often serve as the only health service and medical advising for members of these communities. The mission of SHAWCO has always been to address the great socioeconomic inequalities of the region, and to develop responsible citizenship and strong communities. They use the resources available to them to provide meaningful opportunities and instigate the process of sustainable development, allowing the people in communities to actively manage their own progress. http://www.shawco.org/
Our support of education and clinical healthcare at SABELA will make positive and lasting changes in this beautiful and richly diverse region of the world.
