Opera McGill Students

Opera McGill Students Breaking new sound. Acting techniques and bodywork are introduced through seminars and the staging rehearsal.

As one of the leading opera training programs in North America, Opera McGill’s students come from all over Canada, the United States, and Europe. At least three new productions are created each season: a mainstage opera with orchestra, a baroque opera with period instruments and tuning (in collaboration with the Early Music program), and a “black box” production. After a successful audition in the

fall, which is open to all undergraduate and graduate voice students, the selected casts receive extensive coachings on their role(s), classes in audition techniques, seminars on summer programs, headshots and resumes, and specialized master classes from experts in their respective operatic fields that focus on everything from the business of opera to period movement.

Welcome to The Dig! (Episode 2)

As we veer ever closer to showtime, more and more of our cast are getting their chance to shine on the stage—choristers included. Come join Opera McGill student Michaela Cabot as she sits down with Fletcher Bryce-Davis (Male Chorus, Friday/Sunday) to discuss the ways in which the choruses not only interact with the main players of Lucretia’s story, but also with each other.

(NOTE: All episodes of The Dig are recorded in advance. Episodes 3-6 will be posted during performance dates, but the conversations behind them are still just as important!)

Come see Lucretia from January 30th to February 1st at Monument National—you won’t want to miss it.

Welcome to The Dig! (Episode 1)

With our next production coming so soon, it’s important to really take one’s time to appreciate the work and dedication that goes into putting together a show like Lucretia—which is where Opera McGill student Michaela Cabot comes in. In this short interview series, she sits down with the cast and crew of our first winter term production to discuss perspectives, community, the importance of shows like Lucretia, and what truly makes these shows happen.

Join us for our first episode, in which she sits down with cast member Emma Yee (Bianca) to talk about her role preparation, separating self from character, and why stories like Lucretia’s need to be told. And keep an eye out for new episodes leading up to our show dates, because there’s plenty more to dig through…

Come see Lucretia from January 30th to February 1st at Monument National—you won’t want to miss it.

Yep, I published it. The follow-up. Harder hitting than the previous one on GateKeeping.
(The pic is supposed to ask a question, I'll let you decide if it connects to the blog or not.)

One of the things us classical musicians do really well is gatekeeping. We're actually trained to do it, without knowing we're doing it. We love it, especially us academic types or those who run important YAPs. A pause: If you haven't read my previous blog, please do so before continuing.

So cool !

Oh my! Why do microphones in opera scare people? I think it's because too many of us believe the myth that opera is an acoustic art form. Perhaps it was once upon a time, but if you've gotten out and about in the last thirty years, you may have noticed
