This week, Professor Anastassiadis, Dimitrios Machlouta, Laura Bartert and Fabio Scetti organized the colloque 603 – Approches interdisciplinaires et perspectives croisées : intégration linguistique, inclusion sociale et politisation des communautés méditerranéennes et sud-européennes au Québec as part of the 93rd Congress of the Acfas in Trois-Rivières.

Three members of the Immigrec team presented their research:

Dimitrios Machlouta (McGill/EHESS) — Réévaluer l’engagement diasporique dans une ville francophone : l’activisme politique grec à Montréal, 1965–1976

Lucas Tsovras (McGill) — Godin chez les Grecs : le Parti québécois et le milieu grec de Montréal (1976–1985)

Laura Bartert (Université de Sherbrooke) — Intégration linguistique et inclusion sociale : le cas de la communauté grecque de Montréal

The colloque also featured the launch of the new book Gens du pays : une immigration nord-italienne au Québec au XXe siècle by Roberto Perin, Professor Emeritus of History at York University. The launch included a highly engaging discussion between the author and Professor Anastassiadis.

We are pleased to announce that Dimitri Machlouta, as part of the McGill University–Immigrec team, has been awarded an MGSA Innovation Grant in support of a project dedicated to preserving and expanding access to the history of the Greek community in Montreal

In collaboration with the Hellenic Library of Montreal, the project will involve the digitization of rare and fragile materials, including newspapers, books, archives and community directories, as well as the transcription of interviews. By making these resources accessible through the Immigrec database, the initiative will help preserve and share the rich history and cultural heritage of Greek Montreal for future generations

On May 2, two members of the Immigrec team, Dimitri Machlouta and Lucas Tsovras, participated at an event organized by the Hellenic Library of Montreal, and led a conversation with Montreal-born activist and intellectual Dimitri Roussopoulos on the occasion of his 90th birthday. The event was moderated by prof. Anastassiadis

The discussion explored Roussopoulos’s family origins in Constantinople, his education in Montreal and London, and his lifelong engagement in political activism, publishing, and community organizing. The event offered attendees a valuable opportunity to reflect on questions of migration, civic engagement, intellectual life, and the role of publishing in social movements.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Greek Consul General in Montreal, architect and philanthropist Phyllis Lambert, lawyer and housing advocate Robert Cohen, and the approximately fifty attendees who joined us for this evening.

We look forward supporting the Hellenic Library's future activities.

❗️Upcoming event❗️

On Friday, April 10 from 13h30 to 16h30, join us at the Thomson House Ballroom for "(re)Sourcing: A critical exploration of family archives," organized by the Yan P. Lin Centre.

Why do scholars turn family sources into sources of study? How do autobiographical, autoethnographic, and familial sources turn into larger reflections of the past? What are the “roots” and “routes” of family histories? What are the challenges and opportunities of exploring larger questions of the past through research in family history?

For those interested in attending, please see the following link: https://www.mcgill.ca/lin-centre/channels/event/rgtgm-outreach-symposium-resourcing-critical-exploration-family-archives-365836
