School of Irish Studies at Concordia

School of Irish Studies at Concordia School of Irish Studies, Concordia University, Montreal

Usually, fifteen or more courses are offered annually in subjects such as History, Literature, Film, Music, Economics, Language, Theatre, Popular Culture, Theology, Irish Studies, Political Science and Geography. But this multidisciplinary area of study goes beyond its obvious concerns with Irish matters to explore wider academic issues related to cultural nationalism, linguistic preservation, reb

ellion and civil war, partition and political re-alignment, national affiliation and sectarian identities, changing gender roles, famine, emigration and immigrant integration and settlement. Irish Studies, therefore, offers case studies for a range of issues that are pertinent for students from a wide spectrum of academic disciplines. The School offers:

A Minor and a Certificate in Canadian Irish Studies, offered within the Faculty of Arts and Science;

An annual public lecture series by scholars and distinguished figures in Irish cultural life;

Scholarships for outstanding students in Canadian Irish Studies, including new entrants, returning undergraduates and graduate students;

Special outreach projects of interest both to academics and the Irish community in Canada;

Cooperation with other schools in Ireland, Canada, the United States and elsewhere in the international promotion of Irish Studies.

Congratulations to former Irish Studies Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Patrick Brodie on his new book (in collaboration with Dr. Patrick Bresnahan). The book offers a perspective for understanding the features of the "AI boom" alongside an analysis of Ireland's position in the world system. Dr. Brodie is currently an Assistant Professor and Ad Astra Fellow at the School of Information and Communication Studies at University College Dublin. Click below for more details.

From the Bog to the Cloud - Dependency and Eco-Modernity in Ireland; This provocative book exposes the colonial roots of tech-driven climate policies and highlights global resistance to resource extraction through Ireland’s land-based struggles.
