matralab is a research space of inter-x art directed by Sandeep Bhagwati (Canada Research Chair) at Concordia University in Montréal. Founded in 2006, the lab is dedicated to using interdisciplinary art practice to bridge the gap between emerging art forms and their aesthetic reflection. Much of the research-creation at matralab operates at the intersection of various artistic disciplines while in

volving the development and use of cutting-edge technologies. Such activities - manifesting as artistic projects, software and hardware devices - are informed and guided by critical artistic and theoretical concerns rather than a positivist techno-commercial outlook. Through this approach, we aim to establish a practical and theoretical framework for the creation and evaluation of interdisciplinary, intercultural, intermedia and interactive art, maintaining artistic excellence while engaging in a larger social context. matralab is populated and managed year-round by a vibrant, close-knit group of artists and researches specializing in the fields of contemporary music, sound art, interactive media art, performance art, film, theatre, and web design. Aside from year-round staff and researchers, the matralab community is supplemented by artists-in-residence, external researchers, and post-doctoral appointments. The lab encourages exchange between artist-researchers in different fields of expertise through artistic collaborations and informal conversation. Artists-in-residence and external researchers may also benefit from lab facilities for their project, as well as various technical expertise. matralab curates regular events both within and outside the confines of the University. These events may be framed as concerts, exhibitions, workshops or symposia, but often fall somewhere in between established categories, bridging the gap between artistic presentation and academic reflection.

A new call for TURBA The Journal for Global Practices in Live Arts Curation: the next issue "Un-Taking Sides" wants to reflect on how curators navigate the increasingly polarized public debates of our day. " How can we let live artists and curators guide thoughts and actions that can construct a common purpose? Where do those who untake sides, who speak for reasonableness, for compromise, for differentiated positions, for another perspective than the antagonism proposed by popular opinions find their voice in live arts expressions? How and where are audiences expressly invited to engage with finely wrought, differentiated, and complex points of view?" If you have something to contribute to this subject, be it an academic article, an essayistic observation, a poem, a letter from a specific city, a reflection on your own practice or on that of a curator you admire - please submit your text to TURBA by Nov 5.

As every year for the last 20 years I have again written a little year end canon for people who love to sing. I wish all of us moments of wisdom, bliss, resilience and gentleness.

If you want to hear what the notes could sound like, here is a link to two simulations: one with only the voice you can see below, and one how it could sound if 4 people sing it.
