Self-Defence Under Pressure: New Debates and Enduring Challenges
📅 Saturday, October 24, 2026, 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM
📍 Chancellor Day Hall, 3644, Peel Street
Join Professor Alana Klein and Professor Noah Weisbord for a continuing legal education session examining recent developments and debates in the law of self-defence - including proposals for a Canadian "castle doctrine" - and the ways that social inequalities can shape the law's judgments about threat, danger, and the reasonable use of defensive force. The session will consider how race, gender, and economic marginalization shape the operation of self-defence law, the challenges involved in identifying and addressing these effects, and the ways in which self-defence law can both mitigate and deepen contemporary social divisions.
