Academic programs with focus on Muslims and Muslim-adjacent peoples, the dīn of Islam, the languages, politics, history, art, literature, and anthropology of the Islamic world, and the dynamics of contemporary Muslim societies here and abroad. In its academic programmes, the Institute of Islamic Studies focuses on the religion of Islam, on the history and civilization of the Islamic world, and on the dynamics of contemporary Muslim societies. Founded in 1952, the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill is a dynamic community devoted to research and teaching in a broad range of related fields and languages. Building on its origins as a place where Muslims and non-Muslims came together to study the multifaceted worlds of Islam and Muslim texts, peoples and cultures, the Institute has always maintained a mix of scholarly, community and other engagements in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and worldwide. Our diversity of perspectives and approaches to Islamic Studies, as well as our local commitments and global engagements, have made the IIS a unique institution in the world.

Join us on October 19th, 2026 for a talk by Morgan State University Prof. Sara Rahnama: The Future is Feminist: Women and Social Change in Colonial Algeria. Co-sponsored with African Studies, the talk will take place on Monday, October 19, at 4pm in Morrice Hall 017 (TNC Theatre). The talk is in-person only.

Prof. Rahnama's talk will explore how Algerian intellectuals used Muslim feminist discourse to counter French colonial portrayals of Muslims as inherently misogynistic and therefore unfit for modern citizenship. These discussions cited new readings of Islamic sources, Islamic history, and news from the Middle East to argue Islam was emancipatory for women and a focus on women's rights would elevate Algerians despite the constraints of colonialism.

Sara Rahnama is an Associate Professor of History at Morgan State University, where she directs the first Middle East Studies program at a Historically Black University. Her book, The Future is Feminist: Women and Social Change in Interwar Algeria, has won book prizes from the French Colonial Historical Society and the Middle East Studies Association. Her writing has appeared in academic journals, including Gender & History, French Historical Studies, The Washington Post, Middle East Eye, and The Conversation. She is currently working on a history of the Middle East from the 1950s to the 1980s from the perspective of teenage girls.

A scholarly Ottoman summer was had by Sophia Hackel, one of our PhD-candidate stars at the Institute of Islamic Studies. Sophia received funding to participate in Ottoman Turkish Summer Program (OTSP) at Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) this past July. We are proud of her achievement!

Sophia says of her experience, "I am grateful for the scholarship from ANAMED, and I enjoyed engaging with the diverse Ottoman sources from various centuries and in various scripts; additionally, I loved the additional Persian literature and modern Turkish classes." The photograph in the post shows Sophia standing in the library of the Yıldız Palace, where she no doubt read every single book.

Prof. Robert Wisnovsky has been awarded a fellowship to carry about research at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton. Prof. Wisnovsky, James McGill Professor at our Institute of Islamic Studies, is one of the foremost living authorities on the philosophy of the influential philosopher of the 11th century CE, Ibn Sīnā. We are proud to count Rob among the Institute of Islamic Studies faculty, and grateful for his service as former Director of the IIS.

As Prof. Wisnovsky stated to the McGill Reporter, "Avicenna was the most influential philosopher in Islamic intellectual history.Anything that advances our understanding of the richness and complexity of that history will help to correct persistent misconceptions about the nature and scope of Islamic religion and civilization more broadly."

Dr. Sabeena Shaikh, who received her PhD at the Institute of Islamic Studies this summer, is the new Lecturer in Hindi-Urdu and South Asian Studies at Australian National University in Canberra! Her position is in ANU's School of Culture History and Language, within the College of Asia and the Pacific, and her famous canine Cilantro (Cilly) has accompanied her down under.

Sabeena is enjoying life in the "Bush Capital" of Australia, where locals call the city "Australia's best kept secret." At the Australian National University she teaches all levels of Hindi, and is in the process of creating the dual Hindi-Urdu program along with new courses for the South Asian Studies Major. Her colleagues are diverse and international, which means that everyone supports one another and acts as extended family members, sharing food and languages through the corridors. Surrounded by mountains and bush walks, she enjoys taking an afternoon stroll through the many nature reserves and green spaces where Cilly runs with the kangaroos and watches all forms of wildlife. In the evenings, there are loads of cultural exhibits, free museums, and some world class restaurants to keep one occupied. She is excited to welcome students and to host academics from McGill, since we already have an exchange agreement!

Congratulations to IIS PhD candidate Jaleh Ebrahimi, who has won a Margaret Gillett Graduate Research award for her work in Gender and Women's Studies! Behet eftekhār mikonim, Jaleh! The research award will aid Jaleh as she completes her research on storytelling (naqqāli) and education in Iranian history.

Did you know that the Institute of Islamic Studies' graduate programs include a Gender and Women's Studies Concentration? The Gillett award is open to graduate students, in any McGill department, who are conducting research in Gender and Women's Studies. granted by the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, in honour of Dr. Margaret Gillett, Macdonald Professor of Education at McGill University (retired), who initiated the Women's Studies program at McGill. A big thanks from the IIS to the IGSF for supporting Jaleh's research.

A Mixed Lexicon for Troubled Times: An Armenian Bishop and Persianate Poetry in Ak Koyunlu Lands

In the fifteenth century, an Armenian bishop in Amid (present-day Diyarbakır) found himself as a confidant at the court of the Ak Koyunlu, a Turkic tribal confederation who ruled just east of the Ottomans. Not only did this bishop straddle multiple worlds, but so too did the forms of language he used in speech and writing. Such language is referred to as medieval or "vernacular" Armenian today, and it was replete with Persian, Arabic, and Turkish loanwords, which undertook different forms of labor for diverse social groups. This talk examines the mixed labor of this mixed lexicon in Ak Koyunlu and Armenian society. What, in short, might a suite of linguistic behaviors reveal about communal life for fifteenth-century Armenians, as unevenly integrated subjects within Islamicate societies, east of the Ottomans?

Michael Pifer is Marie Manoogian Professor of Armenian Language and Literature at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Associate Professor of Middle East Studies. His research seeks to situate medieval Armenian language and literary history within broader contexts of multilingualism and cultural exchange, particularly in Islamicate and Persianate societies.
