From the Financial Times Denmark has rebuffed Russian attempts to launch talks aimed at swiftly deciding which nations own large swaths of the Arctic, including the North Pole. Kristian Jensen, Denmark’s foreign minister, told the Financial Times he wanted to stick to a UN process which experts think will take decades to sort out where borders in the Arctic lie. From The Guardian Arctic sea ice cover could be confirmed within days as the second lowest ever recorded, the latest data suggests. According to the US national snow and ice data centre (NSIDC) the ice which forms and disperses annually has been close to its minimum extent for the year for several days and has begun to grow again as autumn sets in. From The Guardian The long-lost ship of British polar explorer Sir John Franklin, HMS Terror, has been found in pristine condition at the bottom of an Arctic bay, researchers have said, in a discovery that challenges the accepted history behind one of polar exploration’s deepest mysteries. HMS Terror and Franklin’s flagship, HMS Erebus, were abandoned in heavy sea ice far to the north of the eventual wreck site in 1848, during the Royal Navy explorer’s doomed attempt to complete the Northwest Passage. From ADN From the Aleutian Islands to the North Slope, Alaska's massive and varied terrain has now been mapped in an unprecedented way, exactly a year after President Barack Obama announced the new Arctic mapping project during his visit to Alaska. The first fruits of the mapping project were released Sept. 1, said Paul Morin, director of the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota, a leading partner in the project. From the Government of Canada Operation NANOOK 2016, the Canadian Armed Forces’ annual northern sovereignty operation, ended today, September 2, 2016. Approximately 850 military and civilian participants took part in the operation, which focused on interagency operations with federal and territorial agencies in Yukon, and on security operations in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. Activities conducted in the vicinity of Rankin Inlet included military patrols, search and rescue training, and simulated combat exercises. [ 109 more words ]

From the Government of Canada The Canadian Coast Guard is nearing the midway point of its 2016 Arctic operations. The icebreaking operations to open up the Arctic shipping season were completed and all program support with science partners and agencies is on schedule. There are currently six CCG icebreakers and five helicopters working in the Arctic. CCG operations are currently focused mainly on High Arctic areas, such as Eureka and the North Pole.
