The Social Economy Initiative

The Social Economy Initiative The SEI is an academic platform for promoting the plural sector and social entrepreneurship. www.mcgill.ca/sei

The SEI is an important vehicle through which McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management integrates social entrepreneurship & social innovation more formally into its teaching, research and outreach activities. Across the globe, social entrepreneurs are applying innovative approaches to addressing social problems that have not been satisfactorily addressed by the public or private sectors. The outcom

e is social value creation, social impact and social change. The SEI is an undertaking of the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM). The MDIIM's mandate is to foster an integrated approach to management - one that breaks down disciplinary barriers and encourages holistic, context-sensitive thinking about organizations - while focusing on three thematic priorities: health, sustainability and social well being. The SEI launched an undergraduate course in social innovation and social entrepreneurship at McGill University in Fall 2012, its Impact Internship Program in summer 2013, its Speaker Series in Fall 2013 - providing experiential learning opportunities for students inside and outside the classroom.

Today we're shining the spotlight on another one of our SEI Impact Interns: Sophie Doyon

Sophie just completed her first year at the Desautels Faculty of Management, pursuing a major in Managing for Sustainability. Through her love for the environment, sustainable reform, and the social economy, she is excited to learn about how business practices can be combined with sustainable initiatives to create a more forward-looking, equitable society. She aspires to apply this knowledge in her future career, with a Not-for-Profit of her own. Sophie’s passion for working with children and music is noticeable in her past work with the Not-for-Profit organization Les Cuisines Collectives Du Grand Plateau. Furthermore, her love for music and children’s empowerment has led her to teach small workshops and classes on implementing music as an avenue of change. Sophie enjoys spending her free time skiing, singing, and cooking. She was delighted to expand her knowledge of sustainable business processes through her work with Esplanade this summer where she developed a detailed schedule for workshops and programs to host in fall for the members of co-working space. She also assisted in events and community development. Her passion was well appreciated by the organization who extended an offer to her to continue working for them for the rest of the summer after her 10 weeks internship.
