2026 Global Health Scholar in Profile: Miller Bouskill

Miller is a third-year student majoring in Psychology. She is working with Dr. Mayada Elsabbagh from McGill’s Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery. Her project focuses on helping ensure that an initial rehabilitation interview better reflects the lived realities, priorities, and knowledge of Inuit and Cree communities.

“My role includes gathering relevant resources for the CIUSS Northern Program team; identifying key themes in the literature on initial contact and interviewing with Indigenous families living remotely and accessing rehabilitation or healthcare; and engaging in consultative conversations about rehabilitation themes […]. I am also working collaboratively with my supervisor to revise interview questions and the interview process, developing recommendations that align with community guidance and strengthen culturally grounded practice.”

Miller is one of our Global Health Scholars supported by the Dr. Catherine Wang Global Health Scholars Award, established in 2024 by Wang’s Foundation to support McGill students engaged in summer global health projects. 2026 Global Health Scholar in Profile: Maria Lima Fernandes Reis

Maria is a fourth-year student in the Joint Honours program in Political Science and International Development Studies. This summer, she is working with Dr. Annie Leung, from McGill’s Departments of Oncology and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Maria is leading a literature review to help inform Indigenous-led policies and programmes regarding colposcopy, a gynecological procedure which helps detect cervical cancer. This work is especially important given the higher incidence and mortality of cervical cancer among Indigenous women and people assigned female at birth in Canada. “During my project, I engaged with the Indigenous Health Centre of Tiohtià:ke (IHCT) by shadowing Dr. Annie Leung's gynecological clinic and co-hosting a sharing circle with some of the Centre's patients. […] Medical settings are not always safe, respectful, and welcoming of Indigenous peoples, but seeing the IHCT in action showed me that [...] culturally-sensitive, patient-centred, holistic care is not a far-away fantasy, but a reality being currently implemented. […] The IHCT is living proof that, with adequate education, advocacy, and funding, we can break away with the colonial legacy of medicine and global health.”

Maria’s work is supported by the Dr. Alice M. Chan‐Yip Humanitarian Global Health Initiatives Award, established in 2022 by Dr. Alice M. Chan-Yip (C.M., MD CM 1962, FRCPC, FAAP, D.Sc. honoris causa 2018). The award supports McGill students undertaking global health research projects and clinical training internationally or within Indigenous communities. We are sincerely grateful to Dr. Chan-Yip for her longstanding support of students and of global health research more broadly.

2026 Global Health Scholar in Profile: Claire Gapare

Claire is a fourth-year medical student working with Dr. Ananya Banerjee this summer to identify and analyze interventions that address structural discrimination, including racism and other forms of exclusion. Drawing on examples from Bolivia, Kenya, and Nepal, Claire will help develop content for a two-day symposium that will bring together diverse international stakeholders and community members to share knowledge and advance dialogue on these issues.
