This is the official page for Concordia University's International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition. In this competition we (undergraduates of biology and engineering) attempt to design and put into practice out-of-the-box creations using biological cells and their genomes as a medium. We present our two-year project: AstroBio and AstroYeast

AstroBio, open-source database for ge

ne expression in microgravity & AstroYeast, resistant strains to microgravity-induced stress. Advances in synthetic biology, including cellular agriculture, enable the sustainable production of food on Earth. However, in-space biomanufacturing, for which maintaining cultures in bioreactors for extended periods is essential, has proved challenging. Microgravity induces global changes in gene expression profiles, triggering stress responses in cells. For example, Saccharomyces cerevisiae exhibits stress responses characterized by aberrant cell polarity, budding, and separation, which affects cell growth and productivity in space. There is also a lack of bioinformatics tools for microgravity researchers. To fill this gap, we developed AstroBio, an open-source database compiling literature findings on microgravity-induced gene expression changes in different model organisms. The database informs our development of AstroYeast, yeast strains that are resistant to microgravity-induced stress. This will be done in a high-throughput manner either by strain adaptive evolution, or genome-wide overexpression and knockdown screens. AstroYeasts can be used to sustainably and renewably produce nutrients in space under microgravity conditions. Astroyeast is a contribution to the explorations that could one day make space our home!

Last month, we had the pleasure of welcoming the students of Marianopolis to Concordia for a morning full of tours and science workshops🧑‍🔬🧬

Thank you to the cégep students for demonstrating their curiosity in our prepared activities, and a special thanks to the volunteers who worked closely with the iGEM team to accomplish such an event!

🌾 Are you gluten intolerant or living with celiac disease?
We want to hear from you!

Hi everyone! We’re the Toast-Busters, Concordia University’s 2025 iGEM team. iGEM is a global synthetic biology competition where students tackle real-world problems using science and innovation.

This year, we’re developing a treatment for celiac disease and gluten sensitivity and we want to make sure our work reflects the real experiences of people like you.

We’re looking to chat with individuals who:
👉 Live with celiac disease or gluten intolerance (recently diagnosed or long-term)
👉 Want to share challenges like:
- Managing symptoms or flare-ups ⚡
- Accidental gluten exposure 🚫
- Confusing or misleading food labels 🏷️
- Limited treatment options 💊
- Anything else that affects your life

🗣️ If you’re open to a brief, informal conversation, please comment below or message us directly. Your story will help guide our project and ensure it makes a meaningful impact.

Who you gonna call? TOAST BUSTERS!

We ain’t afraid of no gluten!
This year, we’re happy to present our project:

Meet the 2025 iGEM Toast Busters✨
Cracking codes and busting biological barriers. One toast at a time 🍞We blend science, storytelling, and a pinch of chaos.
Running on curiosity, lab work, and late-night snacks.

This isn’t your average science squad.
Stick around, something exciting is rising. 👀
