Welcome, L4E Cohort 7 and new postdocs!

We’re excited to welcome six new doctoral fellows to Leadership for the Ecozoic, joining us at the University of Vermont and McGill University — Daniel Muhwezi, Janet Marley, Kélian Bouhafs, and Liam Grima at UVM, and Al Honsinger and Em Challinor at McGill! We're also welcoming two new postdoctoral fellows, Félix Garnier and Katherine McNally!

This new group brings a wonderfully diverse range of perspectives and questions, from ecological economics and degrowth to Earth law, Indigenous wisdom, community-led development, collective action, environmental activism, archaeology, and the impacts of extractive industries.

What connects these different areas of work is a shared commitment to imagining and helping build more just, sustainable, and ecologically grounded futures.

Film Screening + Q&A: ECONOCLAST

What does it mean to rethink our relationship with economic growth?

Join Leadership for the Ecozoic, the Gund Institute for the Environment, and the McGill Critical Media Lab for a screening of ECONOCLAST: HERMAN DALY AND THE GOSPEL OF GROWTH, an acclaimed new film by documentary producer John de Graaf.

The 45-minute film explores the life and ideas of economist Herman Daly, whose work challenged conventional approaches to endless economic growth and helped launch the field of Ecological Economics.

Open Call: New Concepts, Definitions, Illustrations and Translations
What words, concepts, and practices can help us name the other worlds that already exist—and those we are collectively bringing into being?

The Dictionary of Radical Alternatives, a project of the Global Tapestry of Alternatives (GTA), invites movements, communities, activists, artists, researchers, and collectives from around the world to help us continue building this living and pluriversal resource.
The Dictionary brings together concepts, practices, and worldviews emerging from concrete experiences of resistance, autonomy, care, commoning, and the construction of alternatives. We hope to cultivate a space where different ways of naming, knowing, doing, and inhabiting the world can encounter one another, enter into dialogue, and multiply.

This spring, L4E students explored the intersection of anthropology and ecological economics -- L4E's two anchor disciplines.

Led by Sam Bliss, this monthlong module brought these fields into conversation to examine how culture, economy, and ecology shape one another. Through discussions on exchange, institutions, and different ways of understanding economic life, students explored how anthropological and ecological economic perspectives can inform pathways toward mutual flourishing between humans and the more-than-human world.

Thank you to Sam and all participants for fostering meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and new ways of thinking about our shared future. 🌿

🎙️ Episode 5 of Radio Ecozoic is out now: “The Rise of Political Violence in Our Communities.”

This episode emerged from a shared need to process and discuss the rise of state violence targeting immigrant communities in the United States, including recent ICE actions in Minnesota and Vermont.

Through personal reflections and collective analysis, they discuss the emotional impact of these events, their effects on our communities, and the forms of resistance and solidarity that emerge in response.
