Crescendo: MUHC–ISoN shaping future nurses

In celebration of Nursing Week, we recognize the teams behind Crescendo, a joint initiative of the MUHC Nursing Directorate, the MUHC Simulation Centre and the Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN).

Funded by the RUISSS and led by Nancy Turner, Emma Monaco, Selena FitzGerald, Lia Sanzone, and Oxana Kapoustina, Crescendo provides a mentorship model pairing McGill graduate nurses with ISoN students working at the MUHC. Its dual aim: support mentees’ work–study balance while strengthening mentors’ leadership. “Crescendo celebrates what is possible when academic and clinical partners come together—supporting student success, leadership development, and confident transitions into professional practice,” says Lia Sanzone, ISoN.

“Results have been significant: enhanced skills, expanded networks, and a stronger sense of belonging. Crescendo’s success highlights the strength of this partnership,” says Emma Monaco, Coordinator of Education and Practice Standards at the MUHC. universitaire de santé McGill - McGill University Health Centre

Building the future of Nursing together

This Nursing Week, we salute nurses throughout the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) who guide and mentor hundreds of Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN) students each year. The clinical setting is where students put theory into practice, develop interpersonal skills and internalize the concept of professionalism.

“Over the past 18 months, we have been warmly welcomed as we visited key nursing units at the Glen, MGH, The Neuro and Lachine Hospital,” says Fabienne Germeil, Director of the ISoN’s Clinical Placement Office.

“The MUHC is proud to offer a high quality, welcoming, safe and intellectually enriching learning environment, and to accommodate as many placement requests as possible,” adds Lisa Frick, Nursing Manager for Orientation-Integration and Student Placements at the MUHC.

In addition to exploring opportunities for expanded placements as enrollment at the ISoN grows, these visits have enhanced the longstanding partnership between the MUHC and the ISoN.

MUHC–ISoN: Transforming Care Together

During Nursing Week, we celebrate four knowledge transfer projects resulting from collaboration between master’s students from the Ingram School of Nursing and MUHC clinical teams.

From post-TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) follow-up to improving patient safety during shift changes, as well as hospital-to-home transitions and support for families after cardiac arrest, this work reflects a shared vision of combining emerging perspectives and seasoned clinical expertise to advance nursing practice.

“These projects cap a year of innovation, with students using knowledge translation and project management to address real-world clinical challenges," says ISoN Professor Susan Drouin.

“This mutually beneficial collaboration helps the MUHC focus on specific clinical issues, while supporting the development of future nurses” adds Marie-Eve Leblanc, Nursing Practice Consultant at the MUHC. universitaire de santé McGill - McGill University Health Centre McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

Advanced Nursing master’s students Erica Bugarin and Zoe Krochenski played a small but important role in facilitating one of Quebec’s most innovative digital health projects. Read more about their knowledge translation project at the Jewish General Hospital:

As the academic year came to a close, master’s students presented their Knowledge Translation (KT) and research projects at two separate Graduate Student Symposiums attended by their peers, nursing faculty, and clinical and research supervisors. “The calibre of the presentations was outstanding,...
