Founded in 1966, the Institute of Comparative Law reflects a commitment to comparative legal study and scholarship at McGill that finds its origins in the mid-nineteenth century, when the Faculty of Law was established. The Institute of Comparative Law (ICL) offers graduate students at McGill Law a space for the intellectual development and exchange of ideas related to comparative law and learning

. Apart from its pedagogical activities, the ICL has been the site of a breadth of scholarly projects. The ICL has also been solicited by agencies, notably the Canadian International Development Agency, to pursue commissioned law reform projects in countries with evolving legal systems. In the last two decades, work on law reform in Vietnam, China and Russia has been completed under the ICL’s aegis. Together with Georgetown Law, the ICL is hosting the American Journal of Comparative Law.
