🏀 A Fun McGill Connection

James Naismith is best known as the inventor of basketball, but his story is much richer than that. He was a Canadian educator, coach, physician, and minister whose influence on sports and education is still felt around the world today.

Naismith attended McGill University, where he excelled in several sports, including football, soccer, rugby, lacrosse, and gymnastics. He later became McGill's first full-time athletics instructor, championing physical education long before its importance was widely recognized.🎓

Although Naismith gained international fame in the United States, his Canadian roots and experiences at McGill helped shape his outlook. His emphasis on physical fitness, education, fair play, and community reflects many of the values associated with McGill and with lifelong learning today.🎓

For the MCLL community, Naismith is a wonderful example of how a simple idea, created to solve a practical problem, can grow into a global cultural phenomenon. More than a sports inventor, he demonstrated how curiosity, creativity, and a commitment to learning can leave a lasting impact on the world. 🏀

Reconciliation is not a destination but an ongoing commitment to understanding, respect, and meaningful action.

🍂🧡 September 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡🍂
On September 30, Canadians observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day.

🧡 This day honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and their families and communities. It is also a time to reflect on the lasting impacts of the residential school system and to deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives.

🧡 The orange shirt is a symbol of the experiences of Indigenous children who attended residential schools and reminds us that Every Child Matters.

📚🌿 At MCLL, we believe that learning is a lifelong journey. Today, we encourage our community to take time to listen, learn, reflect, and engage with Indigenous voices and stories.
