In the past few years, students at McGill and other universities in Montreal/tiohtià:ke have organized multiple strikes calling for institutional divestment from the genocide in Palestine. These strikes are part of a long history of student mobilization in the city extending beyond the pro-Palestine movement. In 2012, Quebec saw the largest student strikes in so-called Canadian history as hundreds of thousands of students protested against the government’s plan to increase tuition by 75% over 5 years. Although students faced many challenges in the process, including a proposed new Bill to repress student protests, the strike was ultimately successful, and the tuition hikes were called off. In this Get Organized! workshop, you’ll get to hear from two 2012 student strike organizers who will be answering questions like, “How can we ensure a strike is effective?”, “How can we collaborate across educational institutions to make our demands more powerful?”, “How does a strike contribute to an escalation of pressure tactics?”, and “How can we massively mobilize students at McGill for the current pro-Palestine movement?”

Join us for this exciting and important workshop on Thursday, November 6th from 5:30-7:30pm in the University Centre (McTavish 3480), Room 401

FREE DINNER will be served!

Milton-Parc (which spans from University st. to Saint-Urbain) is a vibrant neighborhood that brings together many different demographics, yet it is facing increasingly acute housing insecurity. Many McGill students live in Milton-Parc but do not know how to get engaged in their community and  build lasting relationships with their neighbors. Over the summer, a campaign was launched to ask the city to expropriate an abandoned lot (the old Chez Gautier restaurant at the corner of Milton and Parc) currently privately owned by a real estate developer in Toronto. The expropriation would ultimately allow the construction of social housing to be used by residents of the area, mitigating the effect of rising rent. If you are eager to be an impactful change-maker in your neighborhood, SIGN THE PETITION at chezgautier.ca to get this campaign on the city’s agenda!
