Ever wonder what’s the story behind the martlets featured on McGill’s iconic coat of arms?

The trio of birds, which are said to be mythical creatures, first appeared on campus in 1850. They were immortalized on the University’s inaugural coat of arms in 1906, designed by Percy Erskine Nobbs, the then-director of the School of Architecture.

The martlets distinctly have no feet and are in perpetual flight – a reflection of our own community that is always soaring in pursuit of higher learning.

Have you noticed any other interesting symbols around campus?
