One of our donors, Robert Wilkins, recently brought to us a few photos of the show Under Attack that took place in the Sir George Williams University Theatre in the late 1960s.

Hosted by Pierre Berton, each portion of the show saw a public personality being "attacked" by three panelists on contemporary issues, as a way to start a discussion and feed a debate.

New acquisitions! 📦✨

Records Management and Archives have recently acquired 2 fonds from important faculty members of the Faculty of Fine Arts: Elizabeth Langley and Russell T. Gordon.

Elizabeth Langley was hired in 1978 to teach modern dance as part of the Performing Arts division at Concordia University. The popularity of the class led to the establishment of the Dance program by Langley in 1980, the first university program in Canada leading to a bachelor's degree in choreography at the time. She was Chair of the Department of Contemporary Dance and was promoted Full Professor in 1995. Langley retired in 1997 but remained very active. She was awarded A Canada Council Jacqueline Lemieux Prize in the summer 1998 and was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2020.

Russell T. Gordon was hired as Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1974. His creative output as a painter and printmaker was shown in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions. He received the Award of Excellence at the Black Creativity exhibition held at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago in 1987. Gordon passed away in November 2013.

The archival materials will be made available for consultation in Summer 2026. Keep an eye on our socials for more details. 👀

April is National Poetry Month, and we’re celebrating by featuring the Wynne Francis fonds.

A graduate of Sir George Williams University, Wynne Francis began teaching in the English and Humanities program in 1942. She became a full professor in 1967 and remained a dedicated educator until her retirement in 1991. In 1994, Francis was honoured with the Alumni Recognition Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Francis devoted her career to Canadian literature—especially poetry. A leading voice in the field, she was also a recognized expert on Irving Layton and shared a close professional friendship with him.

Wynne Francis's son donated her archival materials in 2001. The fonds brings together a rich collection of teaching materials, evaluations, reports, and correspondence, along with numerous manuscripts from her articles published in The Montreal Star. Her writing explored topics such as the literary underground and the world of “little presses” and “little magazines.”

We’ve recently updated the fonds description in our online catalogue. Get in touch with us to book a consultation and explore these materials.

Featured items:
1. Portrait of Wynne Francis, 1958 (Van Dyck & Meyer Studios)
2. Manuscript excerpt on Montreal’s Poets of the Forties, 1963
3. Excerpt from a 1961 talk at the Sir George Williams Freshettes Luncheon
4. Photograph of Irving Layton and Wynne Francis, Homecoming ’93
5. Group photo (1943): Wynne Francis, Douglass Clarke, Rachel Wasserman, Claude Thompson
6. Manuscript excerpt on the Little Press in Canada, 1966
