We recently received a large transfer of archives from the FOFA Gallery. These records consist mainly of promotional materials and documentation from various exhibitions held at the Gallery, from its opening in 2006 through the 2020s.

Today, we are officially launching our blog "Boxes and Bitstreams"!

This will give us opportunities at Records Management and Archives to shine a light on the human experience of working with and connecting to archival materials.

We wanted an outlet to share our thoughts, explain what goes in our minds when we do our work at the Concordia archives, share news about recent acquisitions and talk about special projects we took on. This blog is our answer to this desire. We have two articles at the writing of this post, and we are planning on having between 6 and 12 articles per year. Working at archives can be really busy, so we might have a lot to say!

We are pleased to announce that the Elizabeth Langley fonds is now available for consultation at Concordia Archives!

Elizabeth Langley joined Concordia University in 1978, teaching modern dance courses in the Performing Arts division. The popularity of her classes lead to the creation of Concordia’s dance program in 1980 — at the time, the first university program in Canada leading to a bachelor’s degree in choreography.

Langley was Chair of the Department of Contemporary Dance in 1990-1991 and
again from 1992 to1995. She was promoted Full-Professor in 1995 and served on
many University-wide Committees during her career at Concordia. After retiring in 1997, she continued her work in dance and dramaturgy.

Received by Concordia Archives last spring, the Elizabeth Langley fonds documents her remarkable career as a dance teacher (first in Australia, then in Ottawa, and Montreal), a dancer, choreographer, performer, and researcher. The fonds includes photographs, slides, negatives, collages, teaching materials, lecture notes, course outlines, presentations, news clippings, promotional materials, audiovisual recordings, research documentation, correspondence, and more, ranging from the early 1950’s to 2023. Happy Canada Day 2026!

Today, we're sharing a photograph captured in Ottawa in July 1994 by Montrealer and Concordia University donor Joyce H. Newton.

Newton’s generosity continues to make a lasting impact. Through a planned gift of $316,000, she created opportunities for future students in Concordia’s Department of Geography, Planning and Environment, reflecting her lifelong dedication to education and philanthropy.

In 2025, Concordia’s Records Management and Archives received collections of Newton’s photographs taken during her travels throughout Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Vermont in the 1980s and 1990s.

Her archival materials are now preserved as part of the Concordia University Alumni and Friends Archives Collection, helping to tell the stories of our community for generations to come.

For today's ACA Hashtag party, , we decided to dig up some photos of a fashion show that was organised by the International and Ethnic Associations Council of Concordia. The show was called "Prima Moda" and it took place in September 1997.

The participants clearly walked up and down the walkway in style!

On the occasion of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, celebrated on June 24, we'd like to share excerpts from a presentation by Donald L. Boisvert at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) in December 1998 entitled 'La Saint-Jean-Baptiste: Catholic Discourse and the Search for National Identity'.

A graduate of Loyola College (BA ’75), Boisvert served as Associate Vice-Rector, Student Life, from 1991 to 1996 and as Dean of Students from 1996 to 2003 at Concordia University. An Affiliate Professor in the Department of Religions and Cultures, he taught from 2003 until his retirement in 2016. His research explored the intersections of religion, gender, and sexuality. Boisvert passed away in 2019.

Records Management and Archives received Boisvert’s archival materials in fall 2022. The fonds includes manuscripts of presentations, papers, homilies and sermons, course notes, correspondence, photographs, notebooks, research notes, and some artefacts.

Included here is a photograph of Boisvert in his office in 1991.

Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer que le fonds d’archives du magazine étudiant L'Organe est maintenant disponible à la consultation.

Le matériel a gracieusement été donné au département de la Gestion documentaire et des archives de l'université Concordia en janvier 2025 par un coordonnateur de la publication. Une stagiaire à la maitrise de l’École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l’information (EBSI) de l’Université de Montréal a contribué au traitement complet du fonds l’hiver dernier.

Le contenu du fonds couvre le début des activités du journal en 2002 (alors publié sous le nom de Concordia Français) et s'étend jusqu'en 2019. Hybride, le fonds est composé en grande partie de documents numériques, principalement des documents textuels comme des brouillons d'articles et des notes de recherche, mais également des photos et des illustrations produites dans le cadre des activités journalistiques de L'Organe.

Si vous voulez consulter le fonds de L’Organe et en apprendra davantage sur la publication du premier journal étudiant francophone de l'histoire de l'université Concordia, prenez rendez-vous avec nous!

CONGRÈS DE L’AAQ

La semaine prochaine se tiendra, à Montebello, le 55ᵉ congrès de l’Association des
archivistes du Québec.

Marie‑Pierre Aubé, directrice du Service de gestion des documents et des archives de l’Université Concordia, y participera. En collaboration avec Taïk Bourhis, directrice de la Division des archives et de la gestion de l’information de l’Université de Montréal, elle y présentera une conférence portant sur la coopération entre les services d’archives au sein du sous‑comité des archivistes du BCI (Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire).
