The Total Portfolio Approach (TPA) gives investment teams greater flexibility, but measuring its value is not straightforward. New research from McGill Desautels Professor Sebastien Betermier and his co-authors finds that even skilled funds can trail simple benchmarks for years because of statistical noise. Diversification may strengthen portfolios while making performance harder to measure.

"If you're starting with no internship or industry experience, don't assume you're already behind."

Iris Wang (MMA'26) entered the Master of Management in Analytics with a math and computer science background but no corporate experience. Today she works as a Senior Analyst at Canadian Tire Corporation, where one of her analytical models was running in production within four months.

Her path ran through the MMA's capstone project and the McGill DataSphere Lab, where students tackle real business challenges with industry partners. "I learned just as much about communicating with clients and understanding their needs as I did about the technical work," she says.

Her advice to future students: figure out what's actually holding you back, then work to close that gap.

As fast fashion brands promote sustainability, their biggest challenge may be the sheer volume of clothing they produce. Over the summer, several McGill Institute for Transforming Healthcare scholars received special recognitions and awards in management and sociology conferences. The four studies recognized look at the gap between healthcare in theory and healthcare in practice.

Karla Sayegh, Xian Zhu, and Samer F***j received the Best Theory-to-Practice Paper Award in the Health Care Management Division at the Academy of Management for the paper: “The Game of Rules: How Rules Are Negotiated to Enable Interprofessional Coordination”.

Anand Bhardwaj and Samer F***j received the Best Student-Led Paper award in the Health Care Management Division Academy of Management at the Academy of Management for the paper: “A Quality of Mercy is Not Trained: Practice vs. Representation of Care in Artificial Intelligence”.

Both papers above were selected as the “AOM best paper”, an award with an acceptance rate of 3%.

Karla Sayegh, Ann Langley, and Samer F***j received an Honorable Mention as the runner-up the Star–Nelkin Paper Award at the American Sociological Association. Their paper is titled “Unsettling Settled Knowing: Reconciling Differences in Expert Practice”.

Xian Zhu was a finalist for the EGOS (European Group for Organizational Studies) 2025 Best Student Paper Award for the paper “A Life or Death Time Game: Extreme Collaboration in the Level-1 Trauma Center and ED”. He also received the outstanding reviewer award from both the Healthcare management and the CTO divisions of Academy of Management.
