Northern College Moosonee Campus & Access Centres

Northern College Moosonee Campus & Access Centres Northern College Moosonee Campus and its James Bay Access Centres To put it simply, Moosonee is perfect for those looking for a true northern experience.

A satellite Trades Centre in Moosonee, linked to the Centre of Excellence for Trades and Technology at the Timmins Campus, provides high-skills training in technology, trades and apprenticeship programs to James Bay coastal communities. The town of Moosonee is a vibrant, tightly-knit community located 19 kilometres south of James Bay on the Moose River. While its population of just over 1,725 may

seem small, the town’s size is actually one of its biggest advantages. Moosonee is the kind of place where it’s a breeze to settle in, get to know your neighbours and quickly feel like an important part of the community. You’ll also encounter a lot of movement through the town because Moosonee serves as a major transportation hub for Ontario’s Far North. From Moosonee you’ll find passage not only to other northern cities, but to several First Nation communities located on the western coast of James Bay. For the adventurous, Moosonee is located on the edge of Ontario’s Far North and surrounded by countless miles of wilderness and muskeg. In the summer months you’ll be able to enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, fossil hunting, camping, and even simply exploring this enthralling natural environment. In the winter months, you’ll be able to experience snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowshoeing on the many pristine trails that surround the community. Moosonee’s unique location allows for some exciting opportunities that aren’t possible anywhere else in Ontario, not the least of which include watching seals and beluga whales swimming in the Moose River! It’s a place where everyone knows your name, and nature is never more than a stone’s throw away. Oh, and did we mention that several nights a year you’ll get a stellar view of the breathtaking northern lights?

In recognition of National Indigenous History Month, we are proud to celebrate and honour Indigenous alumni who have continued their journeys with Northern College as valued employees. Their stories reflect resilience, leadership, and a strong commitment to supporting students and strengthening community connections.

Kathy Gagain graduated from Northern College’s Personal Support Worker program in 2019. Following her graduation, she provided private care and worked in long-term care during the pandemic, an experience she found deeply meaningful.

After taking early retirement from her administrative role at Northern College, new opportunities emerged. In 2019, she joined the College’s faculty, and in 2020, she developed a new course, Working with Indigenous Peoples, for the Mental Health and Addictions Program. She now teaches this course in the Social Service Worker and Mental Health and Addictions Worker programs, as well as a similar course in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Committed to lifelong learning, Kathy continues her education and is entering her final year in the Honours Bachelor of Social Work program at Algoma University.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to teach. I enjoy creating hands-on learning experiences that help students build confidence and carry cultural awareness with them into the workforce, so they can support others in meaningful and respectful ways.” - Kathy Gagain
