Toronto Star speculates on what back to school F2F might look like:
https://www.thestar.com/politics/provincial/2020/04/23/ontarios-schools-could-look-a-lot-different-when-covid-19-shutdown-ends.html
Some ideas floated in the post:
⇛Students attend classes on alternate days or for half-days
⇛School year extended into the summer
⇛School starts before the fall in the case of another wave
⇛Students washing their hands frequently throughout the day
⇛Students sitting at desks spaced two metres apart
⇛Students limited to playing with a friend or two when they are outside.
⇛Everyone might wear masks — or have their temperatures taken before they are allowed inside.

Whether by June, or even next fall, classes won’t be the same given the ongoing pandemic

If you're using , like half the planet right now, you're also likely aware of the numerous media stories about Zoom's and issues. While we can't help you with all those issues in a single FB post, there are some proactive steps hosts can take to minimize risks such as:

• Not publicizing the meeting information in “public” areas;
• Generating a random meeting ID;
• Always using/requiring a meeting password.
o This can be done after setting the time/date and link by creating a meeting without a password and send an initial invitation but then “update the meeting to add a password, and send it out to invitees in a separate email or via another form of communication”;
• Enabling a waiting room where the host must permit attendees into the meeting;
• Enabling/disabling features for when participants enter a meeting (& changing setting during meeting as needed):
o Enable Put Participants in Waiting Room on Entry;
o Enable Play Enter/Exit Chime to alert you when someone joins/leaves;
o Enable Mute Participants on Entry setting;
o Disable Allow Participants to Unmute Themselves;
o Disabling video for all meeting attendees;
o Disable Screen Sharing for everyone but host(s)

Be sure than any Zoom sessions you record as a host are saved to your computer AND NOT THE CLOUD!

Know that at VIU, any session will always ‘auto-save chat’, even if the meeting is not recorded: This is true even if in your "Advanced Features" you have disabled "auto-save chat". This may not be the case for other institutions--check with yours.

Internet trolls are crashing Zoom video conferences and flooding them with inappropriate content. Here are easy ways to protect your meetings from Zoom bombers.

A very excellent interview with Korean infectious disease expert, Kim Woo-Ju (was on the frontlines with Korea's Rapid Response Team) on and the Korean experience with some contrasts to the Western approaches. (Some English, but mostly in Korean with subtitles) A worthy watch.

Going online for coursework or teaching? Newbie? Here's a 3 step tip to avoid banging your head against a brick wall when using technology:
1. Try to get it to work no more than 2-3 times on your “own”;
2. Try to self-support online & Google for advice or "how to XYZ". Try following advice 1-2 times;
3. You've done enough now: Reach out for support from designated support people (Here at it's LearnSupport, IT, CIEL).

Be strong & stay as healthy (mentally, emotionally, physically) as you are able. We are all in this together.

⚡⚡Attention Graduate Students currently conducting research at : A Publicly Declared Emergency Affects Your Research⚡⚡
The site for our VIU REB Directive during a Publicly Declared Emergency is available at: https://research.viu.ca/research-ethics-board/guidance-during-covid-19-outbreak.
If you have further questions or concerns, please contact
[email protected] or

To summarize the directive:
• Research involving in-person interaction shall be postponed or modified to avoid in-person interaction among participants and researchers, unless stopping the research would increase risk to participants. Ongoing research conducted face-to-face that cannot be modified to avoid in-person interaction must cease for the time being, unless ceasing such activity might pose significant risks to participant safety
• Researchers are encouraged to redesign their research to replace in-person interaction with telephone or online communication. Modifications to research design must be approved by the REB prior to implementation, unless delaying modification of research design would pose a significant and immediate risk to already-enrolled participants
• Ongoing research not involving in-person interaction may continue as planned provided that Researchers employ strategies to mitigate any risks associated with the COVID 19 outbreak, where applicable
• During the Publicly Declared Emergency, the REB will continue to review and support the development of research involving in-person interaction but such research will not be approved until after the Publicly Declared Emergency has been suspended
• The REB will continue to review new applications for ethical review as time permits, giving priority to the review of applications to amend already-approved research protocol

In accordance with Article 6.21 of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2018) and the Vancouver Island University Research Ethics Board (the REB) Procedures for REB Review during Publicly Declared Emergencies, the REB issues the directive below ...

"Wikipedia is one of the largest websites on the internet with more than 40 million articles in more than 250 different languages. Anyone can edit, yet Wikipedia consistently faces criticism for lack of diverse representation both among editors and in content. As Wikipedia contributors and editors we can make positive change and help to create a gender equal world by challenging stereotypes, fighting bias, broadening perceptions, and celebrating women's achievements, and by doing this work informed by feminist ethics such as ethics of care."

No previous editing skills or Wikipedia knowledge were required — all skill levels from the novice, to the more experienced Wikipedians, took part! Look forward to seeing some of you at the next event.

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female; more recent research puts that number at 16% globally and 23% in the United States. Further, data analysis tools and computational linguistics ...

Greetings in the time of ???
While handshakes, hugs, and kisses are thought to be transmitters of the virus, how can you greet each other?
Some people have advised elbow bumps, but here in BC we've been teaching children for some time to use the elbow as a designated "germ pocket" when sneezing or coughing--do you want to bump "germ pockets" for a safe greeting?
Why don't you try the "Wuhan Shake" & teach it to your staff, students, families, and friends?
