Join us for an evening of poetry! Stephen Collis is VIU’s 2026 Ralph Gustafson Distinguished Poet and he’s coming to the Nanaimo campus for a public lecture and reading.

🗓 Thursday, October 22, 7 to 8:30 pm
📍 Building 355, Room 203

The lecture is free. Stay afterward for a catered reception, cash bar and book signing.

Reminder: Great British Columbia ShakeOut drill is today ⚠️

The annual Great British Columbia ShakeOut earthquake and evacuation drill happens at VIU today (Thursday, October 16) from 9:45 to 10:05 am. Earthquake preparation is important for everyone in our region, which is a seismically active zone, and all of VIU’s campuses participate. Make sure you have the VIU Safety App installed on your phone and it is ready to receive notifications! The app will let you know when you can go back to your classroom/office. It is your best source of information if there is a safety issue happening on campus.

We have a new democracy expert!

Dr. Daniel Westlake has joined VIU as a Senior Research Fellow with the Network of Jarislowsky Chairs in Trust and Political Leadership. His research looks at who gets elected, who runs again and how Canadians really feel about democracy.

“Who gets elected to office tells us a lot about who has access to political power,” he says.

Daniel is working with VIU's Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership, Dr. Michael MacKenzie.
