Determined to find a fulfilling career where he can support others, Matthew Eisma stepped outside his comfort zone at Douglas College, finding his voice in the process.

“My time at Douglas has given me the confidence to speak up for myself and determine my career,” he says. “I want to use my communication skills to help patients receive the best care possible as a medical social worker.”

With a background in teaching and cross-cultural communication from his previous studies at Douglas, Matthew felt ready to connect with people but knew he had more to learn about championing their support. To deepen his impact, he pursued Douglas’s Bachelor of Social Work.

“It’s been a great opportunity to understand how our society works and what I can do with my communication skills to advocate for patients in need.”

From caring for family members when they fell ill to making baked goods for loved ones, Mira Genio loved knowing her actions could brighten someone’s day. Wanting to transform her caring into a career, Mira turned to Douglas College’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

“The program taught me how to advocate for both patients and myself,” she says. “In high school, I was very shy, but at Douglas, I’ve been encouraged to put myself out there, which has led to so many meaningful opportunities.”

With support from College staff and peers, Mira felt confident enough to take on multiple opportunities to build community and network. She became a voice for her peers as a student representative and as the founder of the Filipino Club for the Douglas Students’ Union. She even supported work health and safety initiatives with the BC Nurses’ Union as a program assistant.

“My experiences have made me feel more confident in supporting patients and excited about the many different nursing specialties I can take on in the future.”

After working as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in a psychiatric unit, Krista Jones knew she’d found her calling. She loved the work and wanted to learn the more specialized mental health care skills of a registered psychiatric nurse (RPN) to help patients further. However, she needed to continue working while upgrading her skill set to support her four daughters.

Douglas College’s online LPN Access to the Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (BSPN) program made that possible. “The program was flexible, allowing me to work full-time during my studies,” she says. “It’s already vastly improved my patient assessment skills, showing me how to read non-verbal communication and listen more effectively.”

Surrounded by other LPNs during her studies, she quickly formed a tight-knit group of supportive colleagues who encouraged her as she continued advancing her skill set.

With her newfound professional connections and psychiatric nursing skills, Krista feels confident in her ability to take on RPN work once she graduates. Start your own RPN journey today. Learn more about our LPN Access to the BSPN program: https://ow.ly/Z3az50YYmlm

Caring for your community can take on many forms. Initially, Ashley Scigliano produced plays to entertain and foster emotional connections with local audiences. Once the pandemic hit, she felt the urge to support people with their health.

Being a grad from Douglas College’s Diploma in Theatre, she knew just where to start her new journey.

“My past experience at Douglas left me feeling supported and confident, so it felt natural to return to study in the Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing,” she says.

Ashley’s new studies showed her how her existing skills could still help others in the field of health care. “My theatre education sharpened my skills in observation and communication and ability to connect with diverse individuals. All of which is essential to support patients as a psychiatric nurse.”

Combining her theatrical insight with new knowledge, Ashley became a leader, advocating for peers and organizing cohort fundraising. By the time she graduated, her efforts in class and work placements earned her the MPA Society Award of Distinction in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and landed her full-time psychiatric nursing work with Vancouver Coastal Health.
