Mennonite Central Committee
Community Engagement Program Volunteer Description

Position Title: Podcast Producer
Start Date: Flexible

Time Commitment: 1/2 day per week for a minimum of six weeks, ideally four months with designs to increase to 1 full day per week if schedules allow.

Purpose: Assist the Communications Specialist (CS) to produce engaging and informative podcast stories from MCC Ontario’s local program: Low German newcomers, Refugee sponsorship, Restorative Justice, Walking with People in Poverty, Indigenous Neighbours. One-off episodes on international themes or stories could also be in the works.

Key Responsibilities, duties, expectations:
- Deep research investigating interesting themes within each MCCO Program.
- Work with Communications Specialist in exploring different angles of the story using solid research to back it up.
- Compiling current news clips, research articles, personal anecdotes and find ways to weave them into a cohesive whole.
- Process interview transcripts with CS to pull out themes, highlights, useable content, etc.

Skills, abilities, qualifications…
- Strong research skills, primarily sociological, historical, and current issues.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective time management
- Self-motivated, but confident enough to ask questions whenever necessary
- Preferred: Strong story-telling or creative writing background

Benefits: Studies have shown that storytelling is the single most powerful tool in engaging community/donors. To that end, we want to create a new way of telling previously unreachable stories from the incredible work that MCC is doing right here in Ontario. In doing so, these local programs (often overshadowed by MCC’s international relief and development work) will get more exposure and hopefully, more funding and volunteer help.
For the volunteer, this is an opportunity to get your foot in the door at a highly trusted and effective international NGO and would bolster your skills and resume for future work in media production, communications, international development, and social justice.

You Are Here: A Come From Away Story
Screening for Sheridan Faculty, Staff and Students
Monday, December 10, 2018
1:30 PM
Trafalgar Campus, SCAET 235

Join the director of the documentary, Moze Mossanen, for a screening and discussion about the film.

You are Here tells the story of how a small community in Gander, Newfoundland welcomed more than 6,500 ‘Come From Aways’ on September 11, 2001.

The documentary travels deep within this unique tale to shine a light on the actual Newfoundlanders and passengers whose lives have inspired the musical, Come From Away. This includes the mayors of Gander and Appleton, Newfoundland, community workers, police officers, TV reporters, and more – all real-life people who worked tirelessly alongside countless others to comfort and care for their unexpected guests. It also highlights the real-life passengers who were stranded for five unforgettable days, including a couple who met, fell in love, and ultimately honeymooned in Gander, the pilot of an American Airlines jet whose life was turned upside down, and a U.S. businessman who was so touched by his hosts’ generosity that he went on to create Good Samaritan initiatives in cities such as Austin, Texas.

Michael Rubinoff, Producing Artistic Director for Theatre Sheridan and the Canadian Music Theatre Project, gave the idea to writers, David Hein and Irene Sankoff, who workshopped the musical at Sheridan’s CMTP in 2012. Today, four productions of Come From Away are being staged around the world including on Broadway, Toronto, the North American Tour and in the UK. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards in 2017 including Best Musical, taking home the award for Best Director for Christopher Ashley.

Heads Up current Sheridan students:

The Show a Little Heart video competition was created to explore the relationship students have with grandparents or other important seniors in their lives, we are hoping to bridge the gap of generations, face to face communication and technology.

That being said the competition will commence in January and run until the first week of May allowing students the whole Winter term to create and submit their videos.

Open to all students registered in a post-secondary program, we urge students interested to create a short 2-5-minute video depicting their bond with a senior for the chance to win a top prize of $1,000 followed by prizes of $500 and $300 respectively.

While students need to have some proficiency in film creation, video and editing a huge emphasis is also on the story being told.

Many of last year's video's can be found here:
