The Development, Context & Communication Lab conducts research on children’s and adolescents’ cognitive and social development to better understand memory and how people share their experiences with others.

The DCC Lab invites you to participate in our new study! We are looking for families with teens between the ages of 12 and 17 years old to take part in a study investigating how parents and teens make legal decisions together.

The online portion of the study takes about 30 minutes to complete, with the in-person portion taking 1 hour to complete.

👋Meet the DCC Lab Team: Dr. Lindsay Malloy (she/her)

Dr. Malloy is a Professor, Research Excellence Chair, and the DCC Lab Director.

Her research focuses on a range of interesting questions that can essentially be boiled down to - what people say (and what they don’t say) about past events. What are the best ways that we can ask people, especially vulnerable people, about their experiences? These research interests have led her to study the disclosure of negative or traumatic experiences, especially how, why, and to whom children and older adults disclose maltreatment; cognitive and socio-contextual influences on people’s memory, narratives, and deception; investigative interviewing and interrogation techniques; and implications of research findings for the legal system.

Fun fact: Lindsay’s first career - and what feels like a completely different life - was as an “on-air personality” at a rock radio station where she introduced songs by, met, and conversed with many mid/late 1990s bands.

👋Meet the DCC Lab Team: Tyler Szusecki

Tyler is a MSc student in Forensic Psychology at Ontario Tech University.

Their research examines the well-being of spoken-language interpreters in Canada, with a focus on secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction, and community embeddedness. This research seeks to understand how Canadian interpreters are faring and develop practical supports for long-term sustainability in the profession.

Fun fact: Tyler is a black belt in Jiu-jitsu and loves Dungeons & Dragons.

👋Meet the DCC Lab Team: Kaiden Kaba (they/them)

Kaiden is a MSc student in Forensic Psychology at Ontario Tech University.

Their research focuses on how youth navigate the criminal justice system and understanding how their personal traits and social groups impact their legal decisions. Their goal is to help inform legal professionals and policies to help support youth within this system.

Fun fact: Kaiden enjoys creative tasks and exploring different art mediums.

👋 Meet the DCC Lab Team: Sydney Spyksma (she/her)

Sydney is a PhD student in Forensic Psychology at Ontario Tech University and the DCC Lab Coordinator.

Her research focuses on understanding the methods used and experiences of those who interview adolescents with the goal of informing the development of interview protocols with adolescents’ unique development in mind.

Fun fact: Sydney loves playing games (e.g., Catan) and trying new coffee spots across Durham Region!
