Next stop: a future built with purpose. 🚇 Ontario Tech University’s Tech With a Conscience campaign has taken over TMU Station in Toronto, sparking a bigger conversation about the future of technology to thousands of commuters on the move every day.

At Ontario Tech, we believe technology isn’t just about what’s possible. It’s about what’s responsible. It’s about putting people, communities and our planet at the centre of innovation. Because the future we build matters as much as the technology we create.

Ontario Tech University is pleased to celebrate this year’s honorary degree recipients, who will be honoured at Fall Convocation on Thursday, October 15. Congratulations to Kevin Chan, Senior Director at Meta, for his work in technology, public policy and civic engagement, and Laura Elliott, school-board advisor and education-sector leader, for her impact on education, public service and university governance.

What does it take to catch a con man? 🎙️🔎 For Dr. Emilia King, Assistant Professor of Communication and Digital Media Studies in the Ontario Tech Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, the answer involves a lot of research, the right technology, people willing to talk, and a platform to tell the story.

Her podcast, Catch Him if You Can, brought together victims, investigators and an engaged audience to help uncover the story of conman Marcel Vautour. And now the story is hitting TV screens across Canada in a new Crave documentary called Fool Me Once: Hunting Marcel Vautour.

Watch as Dr. King takes us through how to catch a criminal, sharing how technology, an attentive audience and ethics were vital to the investigation. What can a scientist tell us about the water we use every day? 💧 For Science Literacy Week, we visited Ontario Tech’s Aquatic Facility with Dr. Denina Simmons, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Aquatic Toxicology in the Ontario Tech Faculty of Science.

Dr. Simmons answered some frequently asked questions about our water here in southern Ontario, including how safe it is to swim in and what we should know before turning on our taps.

The future of mobility is moving forward in Durham Region.

Ontario Tech has partnered with the City of Oshawa - Municipal Government, 1855 Whitby Accelerator, the Region of Durham and the Town of Whitby - Local Government to oversee DRIVE, Durham Region’s hub within the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network.

DRIVE will help companies develop, test and commercialize next-generation mobility technologies by providing access to research expertise, specialized facilities and business support.

Ontario Tech University is strengthening its leadership in the evolving mobility landscape through a new partnership led by the City of Oshawa to oversee the Durham Region Innovation and Vehicle Ecosystem (DRIVE).

Innovation isn’t always about inventing something entirely new. It can also be about reimagining what’s possible with what we already have. Through a partnership with Mapleview Energy, Ontario Tech researchers and students are exploring how retired EV batteries could be repurposed for energy storage. 🔋⚡

We visited the Advanced Storage Systems and Electrified Transportation Lab and sat down with Ontario Tech Electrical Engineering professor Dr. Sheldon Williamson, PhD student Alvin Huynh and CEO of Mapleview Energy Nick Nesbitt to hear how this pilot brings together research and industry expertise to tackle real-world energy challenges.
