François Bonnet, a History major and an Asian Studies minor, is currently finishing his MA in History at the University of Ottawa. He has recently been awarded two scholarships for his thesis project entitled “L’évolution de la pensée nationaliste d'André Laurendeau sous l'influence du personnalisme français, 1933-1947,” one of which is from Le Conseil de la vie française en Amérique (CVFA), the other from Centre de recherche en civilisation canadienne-française (CRCCF).

François was one of the recipients of the Chinese Embassy Book prize in 2021. He also presented his research paper entitled “The Encounter with the Goddess: Women, Love, and Sexuality in Chinese and French Stories” at the Tenth Undergraduate Student Symposium through the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in 2021. News from Asian Studies (2021-2022 Academic Year)

Cynthia Aubrey won the Outstanding Style Award 优秀风采奖 at the 20th “Chinese Bridge” 汉语桥 Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students held virtually in Fall 2021. This award will fund her tuition and living stipend in China for one semester of language learning at a university she applies to. She has applied to study in China in Fall Semester 2022.

Geneviève Haché was selected to participate in this year’s (the 33rd) Canadian National Japanese Language Speech Contest hosted by the University of Alberta on Saturday, March 26th. She won the third place in Intermediate Category.

Cynthia Aubrey, Oksana Kosarenko, and Gabrielle Tam were selected to present a paper at the Eleventh Undergraduate Student Symposium through the Modern Languages and Literatures department on Friday, April 8, 2022.

Wiktoria Szmyt, a Music major and an Asian Studies minor, got accepted into the University of Toronto’s Master’s program in Music starting this September 2022.

Justin Munger, a Music major and an Asian Studies minor, has recently successfully defended his master’s thesis (supported by SSHRC CGS-M) on Zhao Jiping’s film score, a topic developed from the course materials of ASI3111 East Asian Cinemas.

The recipients of this year’s Chinese Embassy Book Prize are Wiktoria Szmyt and Wren Walker.

The recipients of this year’s Japanese Embassy Book Prize are Geneviève Haché and Kian Lam.

Two University of Ottawa students Cynthia Aubrey (Chinese name 若兰) and Oksana Kosarenko (Chinese name 柯行云) have been selected to represent the Consular District of the Chinese Embassy (Ottawa, SK, NS, PEI and NF) to compete at the 20th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students (“汉语桥”世界大学生中文比赛) to be held virtually this fall. Geneviève Haché (Chinese name Huilan 惠兰, meaning literally "gracious orchid") is one of the recipients of this year’s Chinese Embassy Book Prize. She recently graduated with an Honours Bachelors in Biochemistry with specialization in Immunology and Microbiology. She is currently working towards an acceptance in medical school and strives to work as a doctor in Hematology or Immunology. Gen was selected to represent the Consular District of the Chinese Embassy to compete at the 19th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students held virtually in fall 2020. She received Award of Excellence. 祝贺!👍💪

Jason Josephson, a Biochemistry major and an Asian Studies minor, is one of the two recipients of this year’s Japanese Embassy Book prize. As an undergraduate student, Jason has been awarded two USRA scholarships and one CGSM scholarship from NSERC, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, while he has also developed a particular passion for Japanese culture, art, and philosophy. He presented his term paper for the Japanese culture course at the Eighth Undergraduate Student Symposium through the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in 2019. Jason was selected to participate in the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada's Kakehashi Project to go on the fully funded study program to Japan in Winter 2020. In his research work, he is currently collaborating with researchers at Chiba University, Japan. 受賞おめでとうございます。👍

Samuel Amoah (Chinese name Shanmu 山木, meaning literally "mountain tree"), an Economics major and an Asian Studies minor, was selected to represent the Consular District of the Chinese Embassy (Ottawa, SK, NS, PEI and NF) to compete at the 17th “Chinese Bridge” 汉语桥 Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students held during July 3~August 5, 2018, in Beijing and Changsha. Samuel was also one of the recipients of the Chinese Embassy Book Prize in 2018. 👍

Cynthia Aubrey, a Biology major, is one of the recipients of this year's Chinese Embassy Book Prize. She started to study Chinese two years ago, and quickly became very passionate about learning the language. She has recently added the Minor in Asian studies to her program so as to continue studying the Chinese language and culture. An excellent student within the classroom, Cynthia has been also an active participant in Chinese language related activities and events. She will participate in this year’s Chinese language contest for Ottawa region university students to be held soon in June. She also intends to participate in the virtual China-Canada youth language exchange platform project organized by Canada World Youth. Cynthia loves her Chinese name 若兰, meaning "like orchid," a poetic name given by her 老师. 祝贺若兰!👍

Joshua Hubley, a Communication major and an Asian Studies minor, is one of the two recipients of this year's Japanese Embassy Book prize. He has received merit scholarships for his consistently high grades. Josh has been studying Japanese since 2018, and ever since then he has been captivated by the beauty of the language and culture. He participated in the Japanese speech contest 3 times and was a prize recipient in the intermediate category in 2020. Additionally, he was also a participant in the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada's Kakehashi Project and continues to be active in the Kakehashi community today. He hopes to become a teacher in Japan in the future, and to inspire his students the way he has been inspired by his professors. 受賞おめでとうございます。👍
