Toluwalope “Tolu” Fadahunsi is a culinary management student elevating his postsecondary experience with Algonquin College’s Go Global program, facilitated through the Algonquin College International Education Centre.

Fadahunsi was immersed in a three-week French + Gastronomy program in Rouen, Normandy, France.

“This trip was important to me: it was the next step to accomplishing my dream of opening my own Michelin restaurant. I want it to be West African-focused and highlight ingredients we don’t see in the West (and) what Africa has to offer in terms of food,” he explained.

Fadahunsi continued, “the experience was a reminder to slow down and be intentional. Everyone should do it at least once. Come with an open mind, especially in the culinary path. Things can change every day, and the industry is evolving. It helped me reframe my ‘why’ and have a clearer vision of what I want to create.”

Aug. 12 marks International Youth Day, which celebrates the world’s young people and the positive changes they make in their communities and around the global. Their passion, ideas and determination are a constant reminder that leadership is not defined by age.

Algonquin College recognizes many of these remarkable young people with the Student Changemaker Award, designed as a way for College leadership to formally acknowledge exceptional student efforts and projects.

The achievements of our Changemakers, a majority of whom are young learners, shows how significantly youths can impact their world. On this International Youth Day, we celebrate our Changemakers and all the thousands of young people who walk through our doors each year.

Where are they now?

Meet Marlayah McLeod, an artist, producer, performer and proud Algonquin College alumna.

McLeod graduated from the School of Media and Design in 2024 and joined the College community as the 2026 national anthem singer at Algonquin College’s Spring Convocation ceremonies held in Ottawa. The event consisted of twelve ceremonies over four days, celebrating over 12,000 eligible graduates.

“It meant a lot seeing some of my professors there, and watching some of my friends graduate,” McLeod said of her experience at convocation. “It was a really fun and memorable experience. Everyone treated me so nicely."

"This journey taught me that there is no such thing as a “far dream.” To my fellow graduates, and to anyone whose circumstances may feel difficult or limiting: always try to find a way forward. If one path does not work, try another."
