On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Faculty of Social Sciences recognizes the histories, experiences, knowledge and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, and reflects on the role of research in supporting meaningful and lasting relationships.
For Cyndy Wylde Ph.D. Professor at the School of Social Work:
“It is not enough to document our experiences. We must also recognize our knowledge, priorities and authority in decisions that affect us.”
Research can contribute to reconciliation by fostering respectful and lasting relationships, supporting Indigenous data governance, recognizing Indigenous knowledge systems and advancing the self-determination of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
Today, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, their families and communities, and all those who continue to carry the impacts of this history.
