The Carleton Climate Commons Working Group brings together faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students at Carleton University to discuss climate change issues in relation to the humanities and social sciences, to share academic work, ideas and articles. The university has long been the place our society carves out for addressing issues of vital importance to all of society. And yet in our increasingly specialized world, the solution to climate change is often perceived to come from science or government or some combination of the two. We think the humanities and social sciences have a role to play here too. The Working Group is a forum for exploring what that role might be. https://twitter.com/CClimateCommons

Please join us for the next meeting of the CCC War and Climate Reading Group: We will be meeting at 6 o’clock on Tuesday, October 13, location TBD. For this meeting, we are reading Thea Riofrancos, Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism.

We are joining Fridays for Future Ottawa for the annual Ottawa-Gatineau Climate March tomorrow, Saturday, September 19!

📍Where to meet us: We will be gathering at the Ottawa meeting point: Mackenzie Ave at the top of the York Steps (by Major’s Hill Park).

From there, we’ll be marching together to gather at Ottawa City Hall around noon.

In order to learn more about the complex and urgent relationship between militarism and climate crisis, the Climate Commons is convening a reading group on the topic of War and Climate.
We’re holding the second meeting of our War and Climate reading group on the afternoon of Monday August 24, 4-5:30. We will be reading Laleh Khalili’s Sinews of War and Trade: Shipping and Capitalism in the Arabian Peninsula: Preface and Introduction, Chapter 1 (Route-Making), Chapter 7 (Shipboard Work), Chapter 8 (The Bounties of War), and the Epilogue.

Ottawa Climate & Justice Spotlight:
“We are the Ottawa chapter of SCAN!, a registered NGO which mobilizes and educates seniors to build a pan-Canadian climate action movement.
Our Ottawa chapter has over 100 members who are kept informed of opportunities for action through a monthly newsletter and occasional updates. Members are active in rallies, public fora, visits to
constituency offices and supporting petitions and letter writing campaigns. We have strong collaborative working relationships with many local organizations that share our passion for addressing the climate crisis.”
SCAN Ottawa mobilizes seniors to use their voice to fight for climate solutions, particularly through the promotion of renewal sources of energy.
SCAN Ottawa’s work and profile will benefit from increased membership as their numbers grow. They look for seniors to join us at the level that is right for them, from those who largely support the goals in spirit to those who are able to take part in activities and planning.

Ottawa Climate and Justice Spotlight
The goal of the Community Grounds project is to connect people who want to use land to grow vegetables, grow wildflowers, or restore habitat to unused land in their local area. Community Grounds exists to facilitate these connections by either direct outreach to people with and without land access, or by empowering those without land access to make connections themselves. We also build garden beds in these shared spaces, with permission.

Community Grounds supports:
· people who do not have access to growing space
· people who have growing space they are willing to share

We’re holding the first meeting of our War and Climate reading group on the afternoon of Monday, July 13 to discuss Andreas Malm’s The Destruction of Palestine is the Destruction of the Earth (https://www.versobooks.com/blogs/news/the-destruction-of-palestine-is-the-destruction-of-the-earth). (This is the shorter version of his book of the same title, published by Verso in 2024). We’d like to hold this first meeting in person (though some subsequent meetings will be virtual), time and location tbd.
