President (2 candidates)

Sami Islam:

Hello everyone,
My name is Sami Islam and I am running to be the next president of the Carleton Law and Legal Studies Society.
Over the past two years, I’ve had the honour and privilege of serving you all as your Vice-President Academic.
During my time, I have gotten the ball rolling on many different opportunities for students to be able to maximize their academic experience both inside and outside the classroom. Chief among this has been my work in reviving the Carleton Law Journal which gives students the chance to have their work (classwork or otherwise) formally published. Students will also be receiving CCR credits for the work they submit. (Be sure to look out for an email from your professors encouraging you to submit some of your final research papers for this!)
I have also opened discussions with members of the faculty board on the prospect of giving students an academic bonus in a class for participating in Moot. Not only would this improve retention for the team, but it would reward students for taking the initiative to take up an activity which will reward many of them for years beyond undergrad.
Finally, I have been able to negotiate contracts with the Princeton Review and Kaplan which give students competitive discounts to LSAT courses. The discounts are substantially more rewarding to students than past contracts have been.
While I am proud to have been able to get the ball rolling on so many amazing initiatives, these are multi-year projects which I am hoping to complete from a role with greater leverage within the society and the law and legal studies department.
Over the last two years, I have learned that consistency and strong relationships go a long way in terms of getting things done in the university setting. Those are two things that I have both brought and developed during my time as VPA, and they’re two things I hope to carry into the role of president.
Your current Vice-President Academic,
Sami Islam

Neil Ryan:

Dear Members of our Society,

My name is Neil Ryan, and I am in my third year of studying law with double minors in business and entrepreneurship. Being a proud member of the Carleton Moot Team, Carleton Law Society, and having worked for the Carleton University Student Association at Roosters café, are among some of my experiences on campus. Academically, my time at Carleton University has amplified my passion for learning and personal development. Socially, I have learned that at the root of every field of study is the people and relationships built within their community. Combining the academic and social knowledge I have developed at Carleton University I have realized that bringing students closer and encouraging involvement can positively transcend their educational experience. I believe that the most effective way to improve students' overall experience is to have a unified, involved, and dedicated society that can assist students throughout their journey of higher education.
I am a strong candidate for president of the Carleton Law society because of my relentless work ethic, experience serving as an executive, and enthusiasm for helping others. My work ethic will be a crucial tool in serving the Carleton Law Society by ensuring that my fellow executives have the tools they need to successfully serve the Carleton community. As president, I would fully accept the degree of commitment needed to adequately serve the overall responsibility for the operation of the Carleton Law Society and work tirelessly to serve my fellow students. Additionally, my position as president of Nine Arch Landscaping and Construction has taught me the communication and organizational skills needed to coordinate a fluid entity of hard-working individuals. Specifically, as president, I have had to coordinate with my directors and executives to ensure that operations were running well and on time, while always making time to connect with my team members and customers. The principal reason I am a strong candidate for the executive position is my enthusiasm to help others. I firmly believe that facilitating others to find and achieve their goals is my driving force for why I want to serve my fellow Carleton University students.
As president of the Carleton Law Society, I plan to increase involvement within the legal studies community by enhancing social media engagement with Carleton Students. Becoming more involved on social media would allow executives to better inform and involve students in the Carleton Law Society. Social media campaigns such as give-aways, merchandise sales, and student polls can spark students’ interest in the law society and give them a voice to play a role in the CLLSS. Importantly, I will strive to make an efficient and student-friendly agenda for the academic year to promote stability and predictability. Additionally, I will enhance the relationships between executives by continuously working towards transparent communication and frequent check-ins on executives to best serve their needs. While interacting with executives and CLLSS members I will remain cognizant of the stress and workload of students and executives which may lead to mental health issues. Frequent check-ins are crucial to my duty as president because they allow me to better serve the executives that are the driving force of the CLLSS and the positive impact that our society has on Carleton University Students.

Thank you for your consideration and continued dedication,
Neil G. Ryan

VP Internal (4 candidates)

Piper McWilliams:

Hello,

My name is Piper McWilliams, and I’m running for re-election as your Vice-President Internal of the Carleton Law and Legal Studies Society for the 2021-2022 school year.

I am currently in my third year of journalism with combined honours in legal studies.

I am involved in both the Law Society and the Journalism Society at Carleton. I have been a general member of the Law Society since September 2018. I was the Communications Officer for the 2019 Capital Cup Undergraduate Moot Tournament and the Lead Operations for our first ever virtual Capital Cup in 2020!

This past year I was the Vice-President Internal of CLLSS. My role as VPI included approving CCR credits, keeping record of executive meetings and organizing merchandise for our members.

I have been involved in the Carleton Journalism Society as a mentor for first-year journalism students alongside being the second-year representative for the journalism program for the 2019-2020 school year. Through my experience with the CLLSS and JSOC I have gained valuable skills including strong leadership and problem-solving abilities alongside effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Through school I have an exceptional work ethic and put forth my best effort in any task given. If re-elected I will ensure to carry out the duties set out in the CLLSS Constitution. I will continue to keep track of meetings between the executive and our members, continue to be in charge of all formal correspondence of the CLLSS and work closely with the Director of Interclub Affairs throughout the year to plan events for our members.

This has undoubtedly been a difficult year for everyone but the other executives and I put forth our best effort in making sure we were creating as many opportunities and virtual events for our members as possible. Planning virtual events isn’t always easy but running Capital Cup last year made me confident that the Law Society is on the right track even in the middle of a pandemic!

Over the past year as Vice-President Internal I have had the opportunity to connect with our members and work closely with the other executives and directors. It has been a valuable experience being part of such an amazing community at Carleton! I hope to continue representing the Law Society as Vice-President Internal and further engagement with the society. I hope you put your trust in me for another year as your Vice-President Internal.

Thank you,
Piper McWilliams

Anthony Valenti:

Hello everyone, as you know, my name is Anthony Valenti and I am a first year in the Global and International Studies Program specializing in Global Law and Social Justice. I am seeking your support to be the Carleton Law and Legal Studies Society's next Vice-President Internal.

Throughout my first year, I involved myself with as many student organizations as I could, to be able to engage with my fellow students while remaining entirely online. I was the Director of Finance for both the Kroeger Policy Review and CLLSS; as well as the Equity Facilitator for the BGINS Students' Society's Equity Committee where I played an integral part in setting the foundations for the Committee.

Now, I am hoping that I may serve as your next Vice-President Internal. As such my duties would consist with the maintenance of shareholder correspondences; communication with other clubs and societies within Carleton, and; the approval of CCR credits.

While there isn't much that could be improved with this role, I would seek to use my skillset to help with the most crucial task: organization. There were certain events that were tabled to the Society which were unfortunately not brought to fruition due to a lack of organization. I would like to see this change in the next academic year.

I am hoping that I could help bring these changes and many more to the law and legal studies students lives and help make (what could be another unforgiving year) the best I can.

Morgan Martel:
Hi everyone! My name is Morgan Martel, and I am running to be your Vice President Internal of the Carleton Law Society. Some of you may know me and some of you may not, so I will begin with a quick introduction. I am currently in my first year in law and legal studies with a concentration in business law. Like your typical law student, my two greatest passions are economic issues and politics. In my free time, I like to go paddleboarding and I recently purchased one last summer. So, if you know any good spots around Ottawa, feel free to DM me!
I know that this year has been very challenging with the unique hardships of online school. Professors don’t answer emails, CuLearn crashes and being trapped in your room sucks. It has especially been a struggle for first-year students who have not had the on-campus experience and have been unable to meet friends. As a first-year student, I have felt this struggle. I am making it my goal to help students foster relationships with students in their program. That is why I am running for this position and wish to be a part of the Carleton Law Society.
The Carleton Law Society is an extremely beneficial club. By bringing together individuals with similar passions it fosters an environment of intellectual growth and positivity. Not only is this something I wish to be a part of, but something I wish to help grow. That is why I am running for the position of Vice President Internal, to improve the experiences of all those with a passion for the law.
When I first came to Carleton, I knew I wanted to be involved on campus. In September, I was elected by my peers to be their building representative on RRRA council. Since then, I have become the Chair of both the COVID-19 and Financial Review Committees. In my position, I organize committee affairs while bringing forth the issues of fellow residents. My administrative experience in this role will directly translate to my duties as VP Internal. This will help facilitate an organized and efficient working environment. By increasing organization within the Law Society, we can better promote club affairs to ensure that all who wish to be involved, are involved.
With me as your VP Internal, the Carleton Law Society can continue to grow a positive and passionate community. So please don’t forget to vote for Morgan Martel as your VP Internal on April 9th! Please feel free to contact me via Instagram with any questions or concerns. Stay safe Ravens!

Emily Sowa:
Hello everyone,

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read our speeches. I can assure that myself and the other nominees are very grateful for your time!

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Emily Sowa, I’m a second year business law major from Ottawa, ON; and I’m very excited to be nominated to be your next VP Internal.

On campus, I am involved with the Law Society, Carleton Moot, CUSA Council, and Climate Action Carleton, which have all given me insight on how to be a leader. The skills I have learned in these roles have shaped me into a woman who is passionate about student outreach and assistance in my faculty, and I would love to bring this passion to the Law Society as VP Internal

If elected, the first thing I would like to do is reinvigorate the way that the Society handles its merchandise. Though the classic designs are lovely and timeless, I would like to create a shopping page without deadlines from which Law Society members can order at any time during the year. This will remove the financial strenuity of deadlines in case students may not have money to spare at a given time before the deadline passes. Creating this online hub can also help with event ticket sales, fundraisers, membership fees and other elements of the Society that involve money, and I will ensure that this is functional and easy to use if elected.

As well, if elected VP Internal, I would like to create a deeper connection between general members and the executive council. As someone who has paid the membership fee for two years thus far, I feel that I have not been in the loop about happenings of the society other than via the occasional Instagram post. As VP Internal is responsible for taking all notes at CLLSS meetings, I would like to make these minutes accessible via our website, and possibly via an Instagram Story highlight in partnership with VP Comms and the Social Media Director. This would move our society in the right direction in engagement and communication with the general assembly, and possibly could create traction when recruiting new members.

And finally, in conjunction with the VP Communications, I would like to take the aforementioned role to the next level with a mailing list for all interested students. As VP Internal, my role would be to ensure that these meeting summaries and notes are taken, and through this, I will create a newsletter detailing what the CLLSS is currently up to! Creating a mailing list would aid in keeping CLLSS members informed and engaged with the Society’s happenings, and would in turn create more of a community feel within the society.

As VP Internal, I would take the current system in place, and elevate it. The Law Society is a phenomenal organization that I am glad to be a part of, and the sky's the limit for what this team can accomplish. On April 9, vote for me, Emily Sowa, to be your next Law Society VP Internal and allow me to help this society reach new heights!

VP Communications (3 candidates)

Sarah Siu:
Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Siu, and I am in my third year of BPAPM with a specialization in International Relations, concentrating in Security and Intelligence. In the last three years at Carleton, I have been a frosh facil, VP External at UNICEF Carleton, and a writer at Kroeger Policy Review. I am CLLSS' current Director of Social Media and now running to be your next VP Communications. Here is why I believe I will be the perfect fit for this position.

With my experience this past year as Director of Social Media, I have successfully redesigned our Instagram theme to maintain consistency and engage follower interests. I have also made sure to retain a strong relationship with our followers by answering our social media questions regarding our posts, club inquiries, and member involvement right away (or at least at a reasonable time). I organized our recent Instagram takeover to recognize members during a time where we cannot meet in person. I found that this helped increase follower engagement because it allowed followers to virtually meet our current Exec team in a more personable way.

As VP External at UNICEF Carleton, I had successfully redesigned our website to make it accessible for members looking for general information regarding our club's activities. I keep it up to date by ensuring that our monthly newsletters are uploaded onto our website (for those interested who are not in our emailing list), upcoming events, and our advocacy posts. I also ensured that our website was user-friendly on both desktop and mobile devices, making sure that our website's navigation was straightforward.

If elected, I will continue to ensure that our members continue to stay satisfied by keeping our Instagram, website, and Facebook up to date with a consistent theme and introducing accessibility. This includes ensuring that our Instagram account has a Linktree. This will allow our members and the general Carleton student body to stay updated with our events and announcements. I also hope to increase accessibility to our website by working to have a functioning PayPal widget and through a more user-friendly format. I intend on fostering stronger interactions with our followers. I hope to achieve this by working with the Director of Social Media on creating draws and other interactive activities. This foster more robust engagement will spark an interest in the club but those who don't know who we are.

I have been very fortunate to work with a great team during the past school year, which allowed me to grow my skills and foster new ones. My experience as Director of Social Media will allow me to become an efficient VP of Comms that works hard to put the best image of CLLSS out there.

Kayla Reichstein:
Hello fellow CLLSS members,
My name is Kayla Reichstein and I am running for the position of Vice President Communications. I am currently finishing my first year in the Criminology and Criminal Justice program with a concentration in Law. I have been a member of the Carleton Law Society since the beginning of this year and have competed with Carleton’s Moot Team in both the Capital Cup and Highland Cup tournaments. Joining the Law Society, and specifically the Moot team, was a great experience for me and I hope to continue being a part of this society as an executive member!

Although I enjoyed being a general member of Carleton’s Law Society, I want to get more involved and take on an executive position. VP Communications involves someone who is creative, organized and can communicate effectively with outside partner organizations. With my past experience running a Relay for Life event and being head of the Registration Committee, I focused a lot of my energy on updating our social media pages to encourage people to join as well as reaching out to partner organizations to ensure the event was as successful as possible. This experience enhanced my communication skills in which I will carry over to this position. Furthermore, being a first year student in this online setting, I have witnessed firsthand the importance of social media platforms and what works and what does not work to promote students' attention to a society. If I get the opportunity to be Vice President Communications, I want to continue to appeal the law societies social media platforms to incoming first year students as well as potential new members and highlight all that this amazing society has to offer. Social media is the primary source to reach students, so it is important that it is frequently updated and information is delivered in an engaging manner. By keeping the website up to date, promoting events heavily through Facebook and Instagram, my goal is to increase the number of followers on all platforms with the hopes of getting more people involved. I am a sociable, passionate, friendly person who loves to be engaged and meet new people which I think is an asset to this position as it would require me to connect with many different students, organizations as well as promote the society.

With my great communication, creativity and organizational skills, I believe that I would be the best candidate for this position. Carleton’s Law Society has brought me so much joy in this unpredictable year and I want to continue passing this onto new and returning members of this society. Thank you for your time and for considering me as your new 2021/2022 Vice President Communications!

Linda Al-Sallak:
Hi everyone, I am Linda Al-Sallak and I am currently the first-year representative for the Carleton Law Society, and I am running for Vice President of Communications! As we know, Covid-19 has taken a big toll on everyone’s life, especially people’s social lives. As the current first-year rep, I made it my first priority to reach out to first-years and create a welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable. Since no one has been able to see each other in-person this year, social media has been critical in our lives. As an active social media user, I am extremely familiar with almost all social media platforms! I have had the pleasure of running a very successful first-year mixer where I took it upon myself to reach out to different societies, organize prizes and zoom calls, as well as making it an event not only for law students, but all first-year students! Now more than ever, social media plays such a significant part in our academic and personal lives. I want to use these platforms to bring people together by advertising events so that more students are aware of them, and making our platforms a welcoming space so that people feel as though they can reach out to our society if they have any concerns. This position isn’t all about social media; it’s crucial to stay organized and be familiar with editing software, and I pride myself on that. I hope to earn the opportunity to, once again, be part of such an amazing team, so please don’t forget to vote Linda Al-Sallak for VP of Communications!

VP Membership (2 candidates)

Tayler Wells:

Hi everyone! My name is Tayler Wells and I am running for what would be my third term as Vice President Membership for Carleton’s Law and Legal Studies Society. I am currently completing my third and final year majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice, and I’ll be continuing next year majoring in Psychology, likely with a minor in Law.

I’ve been involved with CLLSS since my first year at Carleton as a general member, and I jumped at the opportunity to get involved further and become an executive starting in my second year. I’ve had a lot of fun and learned a lot throughout these last years with the society and I really appreciate the opportunity to have a role like this and build relationships with my fellow executives and the general members of this society.

This last year has been really different, as the COVID-19 pandemic has halted a lot of our normal events and plans, but as a society, we worked together and were able to successfully arrange multiple events and interact with our general members. I'm definitely looking forward to what’s to come, whether it be hindered by COVID-19 or not.

As Vice President Membership, I have consistently kept an organized and accessible record of our current members, promoted our society to both first years and upper years, and worked with other executives to plan and participate in various events and meetings. I’m proud to represent our executive team and our society as a whole at various Carleton events, through both social media outreach and, before the pandemic, in-person tabling. I’ve fielded many questions about how to join our society and remain active on both social media and email, so current and prospective members can always reach out and receive assistance or clarification. While membership has dropped off somewhat due to the differences and challenges of this school year, we were still able to maintain a solid membership base which will only grow in future years.

If I was able to be elected again, I would continue fulfilling these roles, but also explore new ideas. For example, I want to begin consistently collecting more detailed, personal data on our members, like their current year standing and their major, so we can assess our most popular demographics and learn about groups that may not know about our society. This could help us focus our efforts on promotion and shape certain events to appeal to various groups, which would not only be better for our society, but each member, as well.

Overall, I’ve loved being Vice President Membership thus far, and I hope I get the opportunity to fulfill that role again. Carleton law is a valuable community to be a part of, and I hope to continue to serve this society.

Thank you, and if you have any questions or want to learn more, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Nour Al-Khatib:

Hello CLLSS executive(s),

I hope you are well and safe. My name is Nour Al-Khatib and I am running for the position of VP Membership of the Carleton Law and Legal Studies Society for the upcoming academic term.

I would like to begin by introducing myself a little. I am currently in my third year of a combined Honours program of Law and Political Science. Whilst at Carleton, I have had the pleasure of spending the past year as the Third Year Representative for the Carleton Political Science Society and, as Executive Social Media for the Arab Students League. Additionally, in March I participated in my first Moot competition, Highland Cup, with the Carleton Moot Team. I am thankful for each role as they each allowed me opportunities to take on various leadership positions, philanthropic activities, and roles in community engagement to maintain connection, communication, outreach, and support as a member of the Carleton community.

I am running for this honorable position because I want to help aid in the development and success of all current and future members of the CLLSS community. Additionally, I aim to assist CLLSS executives in generating academic excellence and nurturing moral integrity by ensuring all internal and external operations function at maximum productivity, while further promoting the society.

I am a detail-orientated and passionate individual who carefully considers all aspects to always ensure and maintain precision in all endeavors, tasks, and/or prospects. This past year I have also lived in a time zone that is 8 hours ahead of Ottawa, meaning I would attend class and meetings at timings like 2 AM-5 AM, without absence, as I am a deeply committed individual. Living abroad during the online semester has also built my organizational skills as I had to juggle the two timezones to stay on track with academics and organizations.

Therefore, due to my personal experience with the online nature of the past academic year, the possible hybrid nature of the upcoming Fall semester, and my perspective as an international domestic student, I can confidently say that I am able to recognize, encounter, and solve any and all questions, or concerns that may arise or be posed to CLLSS or by a prospective member. I also aim to work closely with all executives to expand CLLSS’s outreach to the broader Carleton community and law school aspiring students. Additionally, I have further experience in leadership and communication as I represented the youth in Qatar on a panel with FIFA in preparation for the upcoming World Cup in 2022; where I was a voice for the greater youth population.

CLLSS has provided me with the opportunity to understand where and how to begin mobilizing my aspirations for law school, as well as serving as an aid and source of support for any questions I had regarding academics or extra-curriculars like the Moot Team.

Thank you for your consideration, time and support throughout the semester, and I am excited to watch CLLSS continue to prosper.

If you have any questions I am more than happy to communicate further through any preferred mode of communication.

VP Finance (1 candidate)

Cassidy Street:
Hi everyone! My name is Cassidy and I am in my second year of Law with a Concentration in Public Policy and Government with a Minor in Political Science. I will be running for Vice-President of Finance for the 2021-2022 academic year. This past year, I have served as Director of Philanthropy for the Law Society and an Administrator for the Human Rights Society. These positions have enabled me to provide support to executive members in everyday society functions such as administrative tasks, organizational tasks, financial and philanthropic tasks as well as communications tasks.
As Vice-President of Finance, I would be committed to facilitating accurate and professional financial support to the society such as handling payments, creating and proposing budgets to CUSA and working closely and collaboratively with the Director of Finance and Director of Philanthropy. My past work with the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation helped me gain experience in the intake, processing and organization of all incoming donations and data as well as allocating funds accordingly. I truly believe this experience will set me up to handle all the society’s financial affairs with care, integrity and in the society’s best interest. I am a highly energetic and hard-working individual with strong prioritizing, organization and project managing skills that will allow for me to thrive in this position. As your Vice-President of Finance, I would be thrilled to continue to work alongside such incredible people that make up a welcoming, highly intelligent and hard-working society.
