In Art History, we study the realm of visual communication, from the canon of Western art to architecture, photography, popular culture, and the arts of non-Western societies. Our material ranges from the prehistoric period to the present day. We aim to instill in our students not only a historical framework for understanding imagery, but also a methodological awareness of the multiple possibiliti
es for interpreting art and other visual phenomena. With recourses ranging from the National Gallery of Canada to the Ottawa Art Gallery, Canadian Museum of History and Library and Archives Canada, Carleton offers a unique and dynamic program that gives students access to these institutions on the National Capital Region. The History and Theory of Architecture program explores the history, meaning and social significance of the built environment, and how it both reflects and shapes human circumstances, needs and aspirations. We also study the theoretical foundations of architectural movements ranging from Antiquity to the present day. This is a unique program as Carleton is the only university in Canada that offers a degree in the History & Theory of Architecture. Carleton University offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters degree in Art History and a BA in History & Theory of Architecture. All inquiries about programs and courses should be directed to the Undergraduate or Graduate Administrators.
