A landmark study led by Dr. Marc Ruel, professor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and cardiac surgeon at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, shows that less invasive heart bypass surgery can speed recovery. 🩺🫀

Coronary artery bypass grafting is one of the world’s most common major operations. Traditionally, surgeons access the heart by opening the breastbone, but a less invasive technique pioneered in Ottawa uses a small incision between the ribs.

Now the international MIST Trial, led by Ruel and published in The Lancet, provides evidence that this less invasive surgery helps patients recover faster while maintaining the same safety and one-year outcomes as conventional surgery.

The findings show that this approach can help patients return to their daily lives sooner, without compromising results. The study also provides important validation for this made-in-Ottawa innovation, which has been gaining momentum with cardiac surgery teams around the world.

Une étude phare dirigée par le Dr Marc Ruel, professeur à la Faculté de médecine de l'Université d'Ottawa et chirurgien cardiaque à l'Institut de cardiologie de l'Université d'Ottawa, démontre qu'une approche de pontage aorto-coronarien à effraction minimale peut accélérer le rétablissement. 🩺🫀

Le pontage aorto-coronarien est l'une des interventions majeures les plus courantes au monde. Traditionnellement, les chirurgiens accèdent au cœur en ouvrant le sternum, mais une technique moins invasive mise au point à Ottawa utilise une petite incision entre les côtes.

Maintenant, l'essai international MIST, dirigé par le Dr Ruel et publié dans The Lancet, fournit des données probantes montrant que cette approche favorise un rétablissement plus rapide tout en offrant le même niveau de sécurité et des résultats similaires après un an que ceux du pontage traditionnel.

Les résultats montrent que cette approche peut favoriser un retour plus rapide à la vie normale, sans compromettre les résultats à long terme attendus. La Dre Melissa Forgie a été nommée doyenne de la Faculté de médecine de l’Université d’Ottawa. Le Comité exécutif du Bureau des gouverneurs a approuvé sa nomination, qui prendra effet le 1er août 2026.

Professeure titulaire, médecin praticienne spécialisée en maladies thromboemboliques, et clinicienne-chercheuse à l’Institut de recherche de l’Hôpital d’Ottawa, la Dre Forgie était doyenne intérimaire de la Faculté de médecine depuis le 3 mars 2025, responsable de plus de 4 000 membres du corps professoral et du personnel administratif, ainsi que d’un budget de 84,2 millions de dollars. Elle est la première femme à exercer cette fonction à la Faculté.

« C’est pour moi un immense honneur d’être doyenne de la Faculté de médecine de l’Université d’Ottawa. Je suis profondément touchée de cette nomination et sincèrement reconnaissante de la confiance et du soutien que m’ont toujours apportés mes collègues de l’Université d’Ottawa et du Réseau universitaire de santé d’Ottawa », a déclaré la Dre Forgie. « Renommée dans le monde entier, la Faculté de médecine est un élément essentiel de l’écosystème intégré de la formation et de la recherche en santé à Ottawa. Dr. Melissa Forgie has been appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. The Executive Committee of the Board of Governors approved the appointment, which begins August 1, 2026.

A full professor, a practicing physician specializing in thromboembolic diseases, as well as a clinician investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Dr. Forgie has served as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Medicine since March 3, 2025, overseeing more than 4,000 faculty and administrative staff members and an operating budget of $84.2 million. She is the first woman to be appointed dean in the Faculty’s history.

“It is a profound honour to serve as Dean of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. I am deeply humbled by this appointment and sincerely grateful for the confidence and support extended by colleagues across the University and the Ottawa Academic Health Network,” said Dr. Forgie. “The Faculty of Medicine is a world-class institution and a vital anchor within Ottawa’s integrated health research and education ecosystem. I look forward to working closely with our partners to advance innovation, address pressing health care challenges, and contribute to a stronger, more resilient health system for the years ahead.”

Helping discoveries reach patients🔬➡️💙

Dr. Manoj Lalu has been recognized with a national award for tackling one of research’s biggest challenges: how to turn promising lab discoveries into clinical trials.

Awarded by the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, this honour recognizes Dr. Lalu’s leadership in strengthening research quality and bringing patient voices into research earlier.

His work has helped Ottawa researchers move their discoveries into world‑first trials.

Le Dr Manoj Lalu a été récompensé par un prix national pour avoir relevé l'un des plus grands défis de la recherche : comment transformer des découvertes prometteuses en laboratoire en essais cliniques.

Le prix décerné par La Société canadienne de recherches cliniques rend hommage au leadership du Dr Lalu qui contribue à renforcer la qualité de la recherche et à intégrer plus tôt le point de vue des patients dans les travaux de recherche.

Il permet ainsi à des chercheurs d'Ottawa de transposer leurs découvertes vers des essais cliniques inédits à l'échelle mondiale.
