The Dancer's Notebook...
One of the hardest things for a teacher to learn is when not to help.

We are tempted to fill the silence, correct immediately or rescue a student from uncertainty.

But uncertainty can be productive.

It gives students time to think, attempt, reconsider, revise and try again. If I solve every problem for a student, they may complete the exercise - but they have not necessarily learned how to solve the next one.

Guiding does not mean withdrawing.

It means knowing when to step in, when to ask a question - and when to give a student the space to discover the answer.

Until next time... keep dancing.

Merrilee Hodgins, Artistic Director

The Dancer's Notebook is a weekly reflection from Merrilee Hodgins, Artistic Director of The School of Dance, sharing five decades of experience in dance education, movement, and lifelong learning.

The universe speaks…
Sarah Anna Glover (1786-1867) was an English music educator who invented the Norwich tonic sol-fa system (think doh, re, mi, fa, so(l), la, ti (or si) doh). She is also an ancestor of our Artistic Director Merrilee Hodgins. Music is one of the magical elements of The School of Dance... A lovely moment of symmetry through the hands of time.
