The Music and Health Research Institute (MHRI) is excited to host our final In-Person Social Gathering of the semester: Wrapping Up the Semester! This event is a chance to celebrate our accomplishments and connect with peers.

On Friday January 24 from 10:10 am-11:00 am, the AMS New York State – St. Lawrence Chapter (AMS-NYSSL), in collaboration with our ongoing Writing Workshop, will sponsor a special virtual session about postdoctoral positions. We'll be joined by Allyson Rogers (Carleton University), a current Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Postdoctoral Fellow, who will discuss best practices when it comes to preparing for and applying to postdoctoral positions. Her comments will be followed by time for questions and additional discussion. This session will be especially helpful to graduate students and early career scholars looking to learn more about the process of finding and securing postdoctoral positions. We invite all interested to join us over Zoom, though registration priority will be given to members of the AMS-NYSSL chapter.

Congratulations to Ph.D. candidate Shvan Kaban! Shvan is a rock star on and off the stage.

He is currently writing a chapter for the upcoming Routledge Handbook to Metal Music Composition, edited by Ciro Scotto and Lori Burns. The chapter delves into the pivotal role of the bass guitar within metal music compositions, exploring its evolution in structure, expression, and production. The book is currently in the editing stage, so keep your eyes peeled next year for publication!

Shvan will present a paper related to his book chapter at the upcoming Society for Music Production Research conference at Beckett University in Leeds this September. Wishing you all the best for your trip to the UK!

Congratulations to M.A. student Annika Fabbi! Her article "Exploring Publication History at the Riemenschneider Bach Institute" was recently published in the American Bach Society newsletter! Annika's work was funded by the Frances Alfred Brokaw Grant. She will present her work at the American Bach Society Biennial Meeting this September at Emory University.

Annika was also the recipient of the Greta Golick Award from the Bibliographical Society of Canada! She will present her paper entitled “‘What’s in a Score?: Exploring the Publication History of J. S. Bach’s Capriccio, BWV 992” at the Congress for the Humanities and Social Sciences this June at McGill.

A huge congratulations to Annika! We are so proud of your accomplishments.

"I have known Alessandra DiCienzo since she joined our Niagara Falls branch, as a young, inexperienced teacher. It has been sheer pleasure to witness Alessandra's growth, both personally and professionally, for over twenty years. Alessandra has become one of the most educated, inspiring, innovative, and creative teachers our branch has ever known. She is a valuable asset to ORMTA having served in various executive positions both at the branch and at Provincial Council levels. Teaching is in Alessandra’s DNA. She possesses all the qualities of a natural-born teacher. She has impeccable time management and organizational skills. She has a very strong work ethic and always thinks outside the box. Alessandra is a collaborative team member who willingly shares her ideas, knowledge, and teaching tips with others. A perfect example was during COVID when Alessandra’s computer and technology skills were made available to our entire membership."
