International Justice Mission uOttawa

International Justice Mission uOttawa This is the official page for the uOttawa chapter of International Justice Mission, a multinational organization that works to eliminate modern day slavery.

As a branch of International Justice Mission, our goals as a campus chapter are to raise awareness of modern day slavery at uOttawa, fundraise for the organization and prompt action by serving in our own community. We stand by the motto of IJM, that is Isaiah 1:17 of the Holy Bible that reads, "learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression, bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's c

ause." We hope to advocate for international justice for all, local and abroad, and we understand that true eradication of poverty is impossible without the eradication of violence, oppression and slavery. We meet weekly to discuss current events, do a Biblical based discussion together and plan for upcoming fundraising events. If you are interested in joining us, feel free to email us! We are always excited to have new members.

Some GOOD Thursday news for your feed 🙌🙌

- Three children were brought to safety from the online sexual exploitation of children ( )! In addition, two Australian men and two Filipina women were arrested on charges related to OSEC. The children who were rescued are between the ages of 6 and 17.

This a win in the fight against OSEC and the fruit of successful collaboration between Australian and Philippine authorities and IJM through PICACC - the Philippine Internet Crimes Against Children Center. We're so grateful to see this partnership excel and for the government partners involved.

Hey everyone! It’s Jenna, your IJM Pres here to get y’all excited about the IJM UOTTAWA EXEC APPLICATIONS that are due tomorrow!

Q: why is an IJM club important at uOttawa?

As someone who had done their own learning about modern slavery, in my first year of university I looked for an anti slavery club to join. There were none. Then, it became aware to me that modern slavery isn’t talked about much in academia. As an International Development student, I saw that no professor had mentioned forced labour in any of my first year global studies, economics or politics classes. Throughout my four years, I only had 2 or 3 professors mention this global injustice, despite the fact that forms of forced labour are often effects of MANY of the systems that we talk about in class (international trade, capitalism, all that jazz). Justice systems, and how they are being abused by some to oppress others into forced labour, isn’t really talked about in development studies at uOttawa. So because of the lack of attention that the student body gives this global issue, as well as the little study of it in academia, it is SUPER important that IJM uOttawa exists to raise awareness of, fundraise for, and pray for the work of IJM.

More generally, IJM campus chapters at universities are SO important because they involve students in the mission of IJM. We spend our days learning at university, but clubs that promote involvement through event planning and fundraising against modern slavery tap into a different kind of learning. When it comes to development or justice work, school can also be hecka cynical sometimes, and so the presence of a club like IJM on campuses can work to bring hope to students while also inviting them into a mission far greater than themselves. By preaching the God sustained work of IJM on campus, students can be filled with greater vision as to what God can do in their lives and communities.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to apply to be on the IJM 2021/2022 Exec team. It has truly been the highlight of my undergrad. Link: https://forms.gle/F4BTWt89FcS5opiq7

Our third Exec highlight is Joyce! This has been her second year serving as the External VP of IJM uOttawa, and it will be her last. :(

Program: She has graduated!!! She is a recent grad of International Development & Globalization with a minor in Political Science.

Here are her tips in case you are wondering about how you will be able to juggle being on IJM Exec, school, and other extra-curriculars:

"Serving with IJM has been the highlight extra-curricular of my undergraduate career. For those who are concerned about the time commitments of other activities and school- being a part of the IJM Exec team is what you make of it, through the conscious decision of how much effort you would like to pour into it.

I've learnt that with honesty of where you're at in the semester, humility to ask others for help, boldness to initiate help for a team member that seems to be struggling - it goes a long way. I have learnt that your capacities will be different in each season that you're in (and that God has the ability to grow your capacities for the work of his kingdom); so if you are passionate about the work of IJM, APPLY.
Once your undergraduate degree is over, it's over. Don't end it with regrets of what you could have done to serve your community through your passion in ending modern-day slavery.

You will still have time to go camping!!"

What does VP External do...?? You get to plan, and connect with the sponsors and the speakers... firsthand connecting with some pretty cool people.
Full description of the position is in the application form, available in our bio. :D

Next up on our Exec position highlights to celebrate the Exec Application season, Kailey! She’s organized, she’s detail-oriented, & she’s been our lovely VP Finance this year.

We’re looking for applicants for this position who love to make the budget balance 😉 Read up on the full position description in the application form in our bio!

Program? Fourth year of biomedical sciences

Kailey, what’s something you’ve learned while being on IJM exec?

“By working with IJM exec team I learned the major importance of organization skills! For real. But on a more serious note in terms of my heart, I felt challenged and called to waters that I was either entirely ignorant of, or apathetic towards. My eyes were opened to how deep the calling Christians have to fight injustice runs. I saw anew Gods heart for these things & was challenged to love more radically, generously, and to stand and speak bravely for others.

It’s been such a gift and privilege serving alongside these girls, meeting the coolest speakers and being inspired by how eagerly so many fight against injustice.”

Wanna takeover her job next year? Apply through the link in our bio!

Did you know our 2021/2022 executive applications have opened?! To get you all excited, over the next few days we’re going to share bits of what our current exec has learned from being a part of IJM uOttawa. First up, Mary, our VP Internal.

Program: History, 2nd Year

What’s something you loved about being on IJM uOttawa Exec?: “Something that I loved about being on IJM exec this year was getting to see how God provided for our club and for me personally. When I first applied for this position, I was very unsure about time commitments, and about IJM in general. I didn’t think I knew enough to be on exec, and I was nervous about talking about things I didn’t know everything about.

However, over this past year I have seen God show up in so many ways in my time with IJM uOttawa. He has provided amazing speakers for our events, many of whom were so last minute there was no way we could take credit for it ourselves. I have seen him bring our community together to discuss tough issues and work through deep hurt and injustice. I have learned that God calls the unequipped and equips us with his Spirit, and I am so grateful to have been a part of that this year with IJM uOttawa!”
