Aiming for Olympic gold is a team sport, and when Team Canada makes its way to Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics, one of the vital supporting roles is to ensure athletes are mentally ready to perform at their best. 🏟️🥇

Two-time uOttawa graduate Jean François Ménard (MA ’07; BSc ’05) will be one of the people leading that charge. It’s the sixth Olympic games for Jean François and he’s what you could call a multi-sport expert. Except instead of competing, he’s coaching.

Jean François Ménard, diplômé de l’Université d’Ottawa à deux reprises (M.A. 2007, B.Sc. 2005), sera l’une des personnes au cœur de cette mission. Expert multisports, il en est à ses sixièmes Jeux olympiques. Cela dit, il n’y participe pas à titre d’athlète, mais d’entraîneur.

With her life’s rich, unique journey, Dr. Dowaa Saleh (MA ’23) defies any one title.

Saleh, who goes by the name “Dua,” is a dentist and health communications specialist. Based in Ottawa and originally from Iraq, her educational social media videos in Arabic and English have been viewed more than 100 million times and have attracted a global community of 500,000 followers. ��Dua contributes her decade’s worth of expertise to health organizations locally, nationally and worldwide. She was recognized as the first Arabic female health advocate with the World Health Organization’s Fides network of health-care influencers and, in 2021, was named one of Iraq’s 100 most influential people. Dua is also a mother to two girls, Leen (10) and Nadine (six), the latter of whom has become just as inspirational a role model because of her own health-care experiences.

Whether through her career or her parenting, Dua has found a way to fulfill her life’s passion: to use media to make science more accessible and health education more inclusive.

Avec son parcours riche et unique, la Dre Dowaa Saleh (M.A. 2023) défie toutes les étiquettes.

Celle qui se fait appeler « Dua » est dentiste et spécialiste en communication dans le domaine de la santé. Basée à Ottawa et originaire d’Irak, elle a produit des vidéos éducatives en arabe et en anglais qui ont été visionnées plus de 100 millions de fois sur les réseaux sociaux et ont attiré une communauté mondiale de 500 000 abonnées et abonnés. ��Dua met ses dix années d’expertise au service d’organismes de santé locaux, nationaux et internationaux. On la considère comme la première femme arabe à faire de la sensibilisation à la santé au sein du réseau Fides de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé, qui regroupe des influenceuses et influenceurs du domaine. En 2021, elle a été nommée parmi les 100 personnes les plus influentes d’Irak. Elle est également maman de deux filles, Leen (10 ans) et Nadine (6 ans). Du fait de son propre vécu médical, Nadine est aujourd’hui un modèle aussi inspirant que sa mère.

Tant dans sa vie professionnelle que dans la maternité, Dua a trouvé le moyen de vivre pleinement sa passion : utiliser les médias pour vulgariser la science et améliorer l’inclusivité de l’éducation à la santé.

Congratulations to Delaney Dye, who was awarded “Jury’s Choice” and “Audience Award” at SimArts 2025! ✨

Delaney is primarily interested in painting, and whenever she diverges, she usually finds herself thinking that whatever she’s making would be much better as a painting.

When asked how the Visual Arts Department has helped shape her as an artist, Delaney said, “I believe that the most efficient way to improve as an artist is to surround yourself with fellow artists who are also trying to grow and better their own practices; an example of one such environment would be the Department of Visual Arts. As my second year draws to a close and I watch my friends and classmates push themselves, I can’t help but strive to do the same.”

Félicitations à Delaney Dye, qui a reçu les prix « Choix du Jury » et « Prix du public » lors de SimArts 2025 ! ✨

�Delaney s’intéresse principalement à la peinture et, quand elle en dévie, elle finit généralement par se dire qu’elle aurait fait mieux en peinture.

Lorsqu’on a demandé comment le Département d’arts visuels avait contribué à sa formation artistique, Delaney a répondu : « Le meilleur moyen de perfectionner son art, c’est de s’entourer d’autres artistes qui s’efforcent aussi d’apprendre et d’améliorer leurs pratiques, et c’est précisément ce qu’offre le Département d’arts visuels. Alors que ma deuxième année d’études touche à sa fin et que je vois mes pairs redoubler d’ardeur au travail, je ne peux que les imiter.»

Congratulations to Sarah Kuchciak, who was awarded “President’s Favourite” at SimArts 2025! ✨

Sarah is a third-year Bachelor of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Ottawa. Her main medium is photography, which she uses to inform her other artistic practices. She enjoys street photography, as well as pulling inspiration from history and literature. She also loves working with film by mixing analog darkroom techniques with contemporary photo practices and mixed-media collaging.��

When asked how the Visual Arts Department has helped shape her as an artist, Sarah said, “The visual arts department has offered me an avenue to explore mediums in a way I never had access to as a beginning artist. Through the darkrooms and the amazing photo/media professors and technicians, I have discovered my love for photography. Through the advice of staff and peers, I have developed work and new ideas in a way I never would have if I had not gone to art school and been surrounded by creatively minded people.”

Félicitations à Sarah Kuchciak, qui a reçu le prix « Coup de cœur de la rectrice » lors de SimArts 2025 ! ✨

�Sarah est en troisième année du baccalauréat en arts visuels à l’Université d’Ottawa. Elle fait principalement de la photographie, qui la sert aussi dans ses autres pratiques artistiques. Elle aime la photographie de rue, et elle s’inspire aussi de l’histoire et de la littérature. Elle aime aussi travailler avec des films, associer les techniques analogiques en chambre noire et les pratiques contemporaines, et réaliser des collages avec des techniques mixtes.

Lorsqu’on a demandé comment le Département d’arts visuels avait contribué à sa formation artistique, Sarah a répondu : « Le Département d’arts visuels m’a ouvert une fenêtre sur des techniques que je n’avais jamais pu essayer avant en tant que novice. Grâce au travail en chambre noire et aux extraordinaires professeures et professeurs et techniciennes et techniciens du Bureau photo média, je me suis découvert une passion pour la photographie. Les conseils des membres du personnel et de mes pairs m’ont aidée à perfectionner mon art et à innover. Je n’aurais pas avancé si je n’avais pas fait ces études au milieu d’esprits aussi créatifs.»

Congratulations to Winner Tshibangu, who was awarded “Dean’s Favourite” at SimArts 2025! ✨

Winner is a a Congolese international student in the visual arts program at the Faculty of Arts. As a multidisciplinary artist and innovator, he has been passionate about a variety of techniques (painting, drawing, sculpting, installations and design) since he was a young child. His day-to-day inspiration comes from life, the environment and nature, which produce artistic challenges and opportunities for fulfilment. This means he has a range of opportunities to grow, thrive and create, encouraging him to discover new methods, subjects and media while boosting his creativity and confidence.

When asked how the Visual Arts Department has helped shape him as an artist, Winner said, “The Department of Visual Arts has helped me hone my skills as a visual artist by encouraging me to explore my creativity in depth. With support from my professors, I got out of my comfort zone, allowing me to try new things in the art world.”
