Indigenous Mentor Spotlight: Emilie Lougheed

For Métis welder and Okanagan College welding instructor Emilie Lougheed, skilled trades are about more than building things.

Whether she's teaching the next generation of welders or transforming reclaimed materials into stunning works of public art, Emilie demonstrates the many ways a skilled trade can become a vehicle for storytelling, connection and self-expression.

Her work encourages others to imagine themselves as welders, artists, creators and leaders.

Through the ACTION Project at Okanagan College, Mentors like Emilie are helping Indigenous women discover the opportunities that exist in the skilled trades and connect with those who have walked the path before them.

Indigenous Mentor Spotlight: Dolly Kruger

When Dolly Kruger walked into her first carpentry class at Okanagan College in 1994, she was the only woman in the room.

More than 30 years later, she's built a successful career as a skilled carpenter and business owner, but she still remembers the instructor who welcomed her into that classroom and helped her believe that she belonged.

“I carved out my place in the trades by walking into male-dominated spaces like they were already mine, guided by kindness, respect, and patience by the first-year trades teacher I’ll never forget. Every skill I own was fought for with grit, culture, and the unshakeable truth that women don’t just belong here — we can, have and WILL lead by example.”

Today, Dolly is helping create that same sense of belonging for others.

Join us on October 15 at Okanagan College’s Penticton campus for the first event of Success in the Trades, where Dolly will share her journey, answer questions and connect with Indigenous women interested in exploring skilled trades careers.

🍽️ Enjoy a warm meal, meet mentors and peers, and learn about pathways into the trades.

When Indigenous women are visible in the skilled trades, they help others see what's possible.

Across Canada, Indigenous women are making an impact as skilled trades professionals, business owners, mentors and community leaders. And behind these growing numbers of women are stories of perseverance, leadership and community.

For Okanagan College (OC) alumna Dolly Kruger, it was a welcoming instructor who helped her take her first steps into carpentry. For automotive technician and mentor Crystal Roman, it was a mentor who showed her what was possible in the automotive industry. And for OC welding instructor Emilie Lougheed, welding became a way to connect creativity, culture and community.

That's the spirit behind the ACTION Project at OC, which supports people entering and progressing through apprenticeship and skilled trades careers.

This fall, the ACTION Project is hosting Indigenous Mentor Spotlight: Success in the Trades, bringing Indigenous and non-Indigenous women and their allies together to connect with mentors, share experiences and explore career pathways in the skilled trades.

Sometimes, seeing someone who has walked the path before you can make all the difference.

Stay tuned for event dates and more about these inspiring mentors.

A reminder that all Okanagan College campuses are closed on Wednesday, Sept. 30 in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was established in response to Call to Action 80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which called on the federal government, in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples, to create a statutory holiday recognizing Survivors, their families, and communities while ensuring the history and legacy of residential schools are publicly remembered. Bill C-5, which established the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a federal statutory holiday, received Royal Assent on June 3, 2021.

Orange Shirt Day began in Williams Lake on September 30, 2013. Established to honour Residential School Survivors, their families, and those who never returned home, it serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting impacts of the Residential School system.

The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that many Indigenous children experienced. This day reminds us that “Every Child Matters.”

On September 30, Canadians are encouraged to wear orange in honour of Residential School Survivors and their families, and in remembrance of the children who never returned home.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the children who did not return home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and communities, and to reflect on the ongoing work of Truth and Reconciliation. September 30 is one day to pause and reflect, but the work of Truth and Reconciliation continues throughout the year.

For settlers, continuing to honour the Truth and working towards reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility.

At Okanagan College, we invite students and employees to take some time to learn and think about how we can each contribute to reconciliACTION with the emphasis on taking action.

Some ways to take part:

Join us at an Okanagan College information table: Put it in your calendar and make time to visit the table on your campus on September 29, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Wear orange: Wear an orange shirt on September 29 and September 30.

OC campus stores have Indigenous designed orange T-shirts and T-shirt pins for sale

Keep learning: Check out the OC Library’s Talis list for resources to help with your learning and unlearning.

Attend an upcoming event in your community.

Show your support online: Find virtual backgrounds and other images from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (https://trw-svr.nctr.ca/social-media-shareables/).
