Trent University researchers are receiving new funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund to acquire advanced tools and equipment that will strengthen scientific investigation in fields of growing importance to Canada.

Three faculty across chemistry, psychology and the School of Environment will advance studies on aging and dementia care, environmental contaminants, and medical innovation.

Trent researchers are discovering just how much one single-celled organism can do.

Research from Dr. Neil Emery’s lab shows that Euglena gracilis can break down toxic cyanide in cassava peel waste while producing biomass that can be harvested and added to cassava flour and garri to boost protein content.

Using CRISPR technology, the team is switching off individual genes to understand how they influence Euglena’s growth, metabolism, nutrition and behaviour, revealing surprising changes that could point to new applications.
